Despite the movie version of the Ubisoft video game franchise Assassin’s Creed underperforming at the box office in 2016, it will soon get another shot. This time, as a series on Netflix. This new iteration has revealed its first star, Toby Wallace, of Netflix’s YA series The Society. He’ll be playing the co-lead in the show, which begins shooting in Italy in 2026. For fans unfamiliar with him, he’ll also have a key role in the upcoming third season of Euphoria on HBO. Details of his Assassin’s Creed character are currently under wraps.

Netflix describes the series as “A high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation. Meanwhile, the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters — said to be different from the games — across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.” The question fans currently have is just how different from the games will this be. The Ubisoft games famously take place in the 9th century, the 12th century, and the 18th and 19th centuries. It remains a mystery as to just where the series timeline takes place. Maybe the 15th century. As an option.

The series comes from creators Roberto Patino (DMZ, Westworld, Sons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (Halo, Homecoming, The Killing). They will also serve as showrunners and executive producers. This show is a long time coming, as Netflix first announced it all the way back in 2020. But sometimes, to do things the right way takes time. Hopefully, this live-action adaptation of Assassin’s Creed will be more well-received than the 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender, which disappointed both critics and fans of the game. There’s no release date for Assassin’s Creed yet, but we expect more casting announcements very soon.
