Tom Hiddleston "very, very excited" to return as Loki in 'Avengers: Doomsday'

While at the 2025 Olivier Awards, Tom Hiddleston was finally asked about returning for Avengers: Doomsday. As expected, fans were ecstatic when they saw his name on one of the chairs during Marvel Studios' five and a half hour live stream.

"Very, very excited! It's really remarkable actually that I can talk about it because mostly I'm in a position of knowing and not being able to say anything," the actor expressed. "It's strange. You have to be just very disciplined about carrying this secret around. It’s been an extraordinary chapter of my life playing Loki, and it’s not over yet."

The last time we saw Loki was in the second season finale of Loki on Disney+, and it was unclear if the character would come back. Hiddleston was 29 years old when he was first cast and turned 44 in February, making this a 16-year journey. He has been in six films and 12 episodes of television. As he said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, everything comes "full circle" for the character in the series.

"In the finale, there are echoes and resonances of every version of Loki that I've played," he explained. "The episode is called 'Glorious Purpose' and if you remember in the first Avengers film, Loki comes down to earth, looks straight at Sam Jackson as Nick Fury, and I say, 'I'm Loki of Asgard. I'm burdened with glorious purpose.'"

Naturally, that was not the only Easter egg. His final line, "I know what I want. I know what kind of god I need to be — for you. For all of us," was actually the actor's idea, mirroring the line he says at the end of Thor, "I could have done it, Father — for you. For all of us."

While the first time is "full of need, desperation, yearning for acceptance and misguided intention," and "his own broken heart," this time was different. "It has a completely different meaning, which is full of love, sacrifice, selflessness, and generosity," he told Shōgun star Anna Sawai for Variety

He credits the reason that he's been able to play the character for so long is "because of the audience’s curiosity and passion," mentioning to Backstage, "I’ve been delighted to find that for a character of such stature, he’s remarkably human. Many of the characteristics that people connect to in Loki are deeply human feelings. That’s been the pleasure, is infusing this elevated character with humanity."

The rest of the cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr.

Get ready, the sun will shine on Loki and Thor again in Avengers: Doomsday, which will be released in theaters in May 2026.
