Moana is getting a surprise sequel.
Announced with a stunning trailer, the follow-up to Disney’s 2016 hit will release in theatres November 27.
Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed Moana 2 was initially meant to be a TV series. In a call with investors, Iger says during development “we were impressed by what we saw, and knew it deserved a theatrical release.”
Its watch time on Disney+ might have something to do with the move. According to Iger, Moana amassed one billion minutes of viewing on Disney+ in 2023.
This is not to be confused with the upcoming live-action remake of Moana, which is set to star Dwayne Johnson. He voices Maui in the original animated movie, and is expected to return for Moana 2.
Moana follows a young woman who teams up with a demigod of the wind and sea and embarks on an island-hopping adventure across Polynesia.
Dave Derrick Jr., who worked on the original film as a story board artist, directs Moana 2.
Meanwhile, Frozen 4 enters production at Disney.
