There have been so many legacy sequels and reboots that some of them are starting to slip through the cracks. So, when we saw the news that Dewey was being recast in the upcoming "Malcolm in the Middle" revival, our first thought was, "The what now?" Apparently there will indeed be a four-episode reboot of the FOX sitcom dropping on Disney+, and we've gotten some casting news that we're digesting as we digest the very existence of thing whole thing.
Evidently the first news related to this "Malcolm in the Middle" reboot was that Frankie Muniz as the titular Malcolm and his on-screen parents Jane Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston were returning for this project. Hal and Lois are having their 40th wedding anniversary and Malcolm, who now has a daughter, is being pressured to be there. The whole thing was going to be a movie but is now a four-episode entity for Disney+. That...okay that actually doesn't sound that bad.
The revival had already cast Malcolm's girlfriend, daughter, and also the two youngest siblings of the family Jamie and Kelly. We now know that Christopher Masterson is returning to play the eldest child Francis and that Justin Berfield is back as Reese. However, Erik Per Sullivan, who played the youngest child (for most of the show's run) Dewey, will not be returning. He hasn't acted as an adult and does not do anything showbiz related, so that isn't a surprise. And, you know, good for him. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, who you may have seen on the "Fargo" show or "The Expanse," has been cast in his place.
This four-episode return of "Malcolm in the Middle" is notable, because the show was a hit 2000s sitcom that stands as the first real "2000s Sitcom." Evidently for people who were of a certain age at the time it's a defining comedy. In fact, "WandaVision" riffed on "Malcolm in the Middle," during its run, which speaks to just how seminal it is to many. We're fully to the point where the 2000s sitcoms are getting the nostalgia reboots.
The fact Cranston and Kaczmarek are back is really the crucial thing to this. Well, and Muniz, we suppose. Hard to do a "Malcolm in the Middle" project without Malcolm. They will begin shooting this April to work around Muniz's NASCAR schedule. Oh yeah, Muniz is a professional racecar driver. What, you didn't know that?
