The late Val Kilmer began his career in comedy, which he excelled at, before focusing on drama and becoming an action star. Post his career peak, Kilmer returned to comedy in the bananas "Saturday Night Live" movie "MacGruber." The film flopped, but also became a cult hit, both things one probably should have expected. Kilmer played the villain, but while working on the movie he and star Will Forte became friends. This friendship, if the actors had been allowed, would have led to an appearance on the reality competition show "The Amazing Race."
Forte shared his memories of his late friend for Vulture, including a time when the two lived together. At the time, Forte was watching "The Amazing Race," the CBS show where teams of two traverse the world taking on challenges and the like. Initially, Kilmer was dismissive, but he came to be absorbed in the show. He then broached the idea of the two actors doing "The Amazing Race" together. Forte was in, and assuredly the show's producers would have loved to have two celebrities of that caliber on board as a team. Alas, business got in the way. As Forte explained:
We got really excited about it, and then we called our respective agents and managers, and they were like, "There’s no way you guys are doing that."
Forte presumed that the two actors would have been eliminated early, so what were all those representatives worried about? As silly and delightful as the notion of Will Forte and Val Kilmer running around Latin America or Southeast Asia trying to figure out some tricky task is, the definitive reality that this will never come to fruition does land with some poignancy. Forte said that not doing "The Amazing Race" with Kilmer is perhaps "the biggest regret of my whole career," and upon the loss of his friend, that does tug the heartstrings in an odd way.
