It is time for us to head back to Panem for another devastating story of loss, love, and revolution. This time, our new Hunger Games movie will center on the character who stole much of the attention during his time in the original Hunger Games series, Haymitch Abernathy. After a very successful outing for Suzanne Collins’ Haymitch prequel book, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, it’s time for the cinematic version to hit our screens. Of course, we’d kind of hoped the powers that be would put Woody Harrelson back in the movie as young Haymitch, and just play it straight. But that might have ruined the vibes. Instead, a new set of actors will step into some of The Hunger Games‘ most iconic roles, including Ralph Fiennes as President Snow after the passing of Donald Sutherland, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee after the passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman, and, of course, Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy himself. And now, you can watch them all in action in the trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
If there’s one thing we know, it’s that there’s no escaping the Hunger Games unscathed, and this trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is not pulling any punches. After a brief sojourn in the harrowing, colorless world of the first-ever Hunger Games in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, this new movie takes us to their 50th outing, the Second Quarter Quell. This time, twice as many tributes as ever before are reaped, as President Snow continues his sadistic, twisted rule of Panem. Needless to say, President Snow and Haymitch Abernathy will not be getting along. But there may also be more connections to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes than one imagines. Keep your eyes peeled… Or read the book.
We appreciate how this The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping trailer takes care to keep the tributes looking like the young children they are. It really helps to underscore the brutality and unfairness of the games.
Alongside this trailer, we received the official synopsis for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. It shares, “THE HUNGER GAMES: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING revisits the world of Panem and follows young Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada) twenty-four years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.“
In The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping trailer, we get our first look at Jesse Plemons stepping into the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, first played to perfection by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Hoffman perfectly fit the shrewd and jovially dark role in his Hunger Games turn. But if there was anyone who could fill his shoes, it’s Jesse Plemons, an actor with incredible range. We applauded the casting of Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee when we first heard about it. And we applaud it now as we get our first full glimpse of Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping trailer.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping trailer also gives us a taste of another major recasting for this new Hunger Games movie. In it, we get our first look at Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, a recasting that occurred after the passing of Donald Sutherland. Fiennes, too, looks just right for the role, and we know he can do menace well. We bet this new version of President Snow will chill us just as much as ever.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping movie will be release on November 20, 2026.
