Watch: Mike Myers is a deranged Elon Musk on SNL

In recent years it has been increasingly common for "Saturday Night Live" to bring in people who aren't cast members for recurring impersonations. This is primarily done in the political space. At least Lorne Michaels and company have been turning to former cast members more for these impersonations, staying "in-house" to some degree. Plus, it meant getting to see Maya Rudolph and Dana Carvey more than we would have been able to otherwise.

The most-recent former "SNL" cast member to appear doing an impersonation is Mike Myers, who appeared as Elon Musk during the cold open sketch of the most recent "SNL" episode.

The sketch is built around the bananas White House meeting that featured Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, and Marco Rubio seemingly trying his hardest to see if there is anything to the idea of astral projection. Mostly it serves as a showcase for James Austin Johnson's much-venerated Trump impression, but then Myers pops in as Musk to become the new focal point for the last couple minutes of the sketch.

Myers is an all-time "SNL" cast member, and not just because the "Wayne's World" movies are the only movies based on "SNL" sketch characters that are any good (the Blues Brothers don't count because they were barely characters on the show). That being said...this wasn't the best of impersonations. Some of that is the writing, which gave Myers so-so material to work with (in what was a fairly strong sketch to that point). However. Myers doesn't seem to have his take locked in on Musk just yet. To be fair, while Myers did some strong character work during his time on "SNL," he was not the impressionist that, say, Carvey was.

By the time the show was over, though, more people were talking about Myers in the closing credits than his turn as Musk. During the traditional "good nights" at the end of the show, Myers wore a shirt featuring the Canadian flag and the word's, "Canada is not for sale." The good Ontario boy was referencing Trump's pontificating on the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state, a bizarre notion even for him.

Maybe next time Myers plays Musk (and we feel pretty confident there will be a next time) he can appear during the good nights wearing a Tragically Hip shirt and holding a cup of Tim Horton's coffee.
