Watch the first trailer for 'Dear Evan Hansen' starring Ben Platt

Dear Evan Hansen was an unmitigated smash on Broadway—collecting six Tony Awards and one Grammy Award, including Ben Platt's Tony for his portrayal of the titular character.

All of which is to say that the film adaptation directed by Stephen Chbosky has a lot to live up to, but the trailer shows Platt to be just as engrossing.

For those who haven't been lucky enough to see the enrapturing and tortured Dear Evan Hansen, Max Hechtman summed up the plot on IMDb:

"Film adaptation of the Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical by Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul about Evan Hansen, a high school senior with a severe social anxiety disorder, whose letter to himself, one that was not meant to be seen by others, lands into the wrong hands of a fellow classmate who, as a result, commits suicide. This incident sends Evan on a journey of self-discovery and gives him the chance to finally be accepted by his peers and live the life he never dreamed he could have."

The movie will also star heavy-hitters such as Julianne Moore, Amy Adams, Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, and more.
