Guillermo del Toro is probably the living king of the creature feature. He and Netflix are also in a good place right now. Del Toro had wanted to make a "Pinocchio" movie for years, and Netflix finally gave him the money to make it. The streaming giant was rewarded with a critically-acclaimed film that won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Now, del Toro has another film based on a well-adapted piece of literature. Making a "Frankenstein" movie has, in a way, been what del Toro's whole career has been building to, and now it has happened. We now have a trailer:
Yes, "Frankenstein" is well-worn at this point. We know the - not intended as a pun - nuts and bolts of what is going to happen. That being said, del Toro's "Frankenstein" looks really promising. If the trailer is an accurate reflective of the tone and quality of the movie, it's going to be a worthwhile adaptation. Also, kudos to whoever did cut this trailer, because we're hyped for this one now.
Taking center stage in the trailer (a trailer that, with assured intention, shrouds the monster throughout the process) is Oscar Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein. Again, if this is a trailer of accurate reflection, keep Isaac in mind for an Oscar nomination.
Del Toro knows his way around Gothic horror, and the aesthetics thereof, and he can elevate the creature feature. Dude won Best Picture for "The Shape of Water," which is just built out of him thinking to himself, "What if a lady wanted to throw down with the Creature from the Black Lagoon?" This is his wheelhouse.
"Frankenstein" hits Netflix this November.
