Wes Anderson has been on a heater in the 2020s. He's had two feature-length movies come out, the excellent "The French Dispatch" and "Asteroid City." Those films both lean into the idea of "Wes Anderson" and are the better for it. Then, he made four shorts for Netflix adapted from Roald Dahl stories, one of which won him his first Oscar.
That being said, "The Phoenician Scheme," Anderson's upcoming movie, certainly does not have Oscar-bait vibes, which is abundantly clear after watching the trailer.
You know, at some point Anderson's ensemble is going to get so large that he's going to have to make a movie about a baseball game and have every fan in the stadium be a character. With "Asteroid City," he added two massive stars in Tom Hanks and Scarlett Johansson into the fold, and they both return. So does Benedict Cumberbatch, added into the mix with the Dahl shorts. However, atop the cast is Benicio del Toro, who had already been in a couple Anderson's. Speaking of, del Toro also has a role in "One Battle After Another," the new movie from Paul Thomas Anderson. It's going to be a big year for him.
A couple new faces to the world of Wes Anderson seem to have prominent roles in "The Phoenician Scheme." While Michael Cera is a recognizable actor, relative unknown Mia Threapleton (that's a very Wes Anderson-y name in and of itself) plays del Toro's nun daughter. While Threapleton is early in her career, the path was always going to be available to her. Her father is a director and her mother is, um, Kate Winslet. Hey, Wes Anderson is very specific with his sensibilities and movies, so if he wants you in a sizable role, it's not because of nepotism.
"The Phoenician Scheme" seems particularly zany, and is honestly not entirely encouraging as to the film's quality. Even we Wes Anderson lovers can have some pause. However, the trailers for "Asteroid City," did not give an accurate representation of what that movie is. Thus, our enthusiasm remains for "The Phoenician Scheme," which arrives in theaters on May 30.
