The second season (perhaps series) finale of Peacemaker ended on quite a cliffhanger for our titular hero. Although the episode was extra long, running for an hour, it left some major dangling threads. Not just for the DCU in general, but for the character of Christopher Smith (John Cena). A cliffhanger that sees him kidnapped by Rick Flag’s ARGUS agents, thrown into another dimension all alone, with no way home. By the end of the season, Flag has his revenge for the death of his son at Peacemaker’s hands in The Suicide Squad. He leaves Chris stranded with nothing but the clothes on his back, on a hostile planet in another dimension.
Most of the episode deals with the fallout of Peacemaker’s escape from the Nazi-ruled alternate Earth, which we’ll call Earth X. He blames himself for the death of his alternate father Auggie, and his brother Keith’s near-death at the hands of both Eagly and Harcourt (Jennifer Holland). After getting bailed out of jail by his friends, Chris tries to do the same thing he did at the start of the season. He loses himself in sex and drugs. But Adebayo manages to convince him that he’s not at fault, and not some “angel of death” like he thinks he is. She gets through to him, and he even gets together romantically with Emilia Harcourt. Near the end of the episode, it shows Chris joining his friends in making a new organization called Checkmate.
That happy ending does not last, however. When coming home, armed goons jump him and put a sack over his head, transporting him to ARGUS. There, Rick Flag Sr. finally gets to enact his revenge on Peacemaker for killing his son years earlier. He uses the Quantum Unfolding Storage Space to send Chris to the newly discovered dimension. This realm will be his prison for metahumans which he calls Salvation. Chris has no weapons, no food, and just the clothes he’s got on. Although the planet looks serene, we hear the sound of a creature of some kind off in the distance. If Chris is going to survive here, he’s going to have to get more resourceful than we’ve seen him be.
Of course, it seems likely that his friends at Checkmate will know exactly who took Chris. They all know that Rick Flag Sr. is obsessed with punishing Peacemaker for the death of his son. But recently, series creator James Gunn has cast doubt on the idea of a third season of Peacemaker. We can’t imagine Gunn leaving Chris Smith to die alone on the Salvation planet. He doesn’t even have Eagly with him! We foresee a scenario where the former 11th Street Kids break into ARGUS. Once there, they can use the dimensional doorway to find their lost friend. Or, if ARGUS starts dumping metahumans on that world soon, Chris won’t be so alone. Hopefully, fans won’t have to wait years to find out what happens.
