What is The Upside Down in 'Stranger Things'? The final season will finally explain
the upside down stranger things Netflix

Just what is The Upside Down in Stranger Things‘ world? The truth is that we still don’t know in full. After four seasons of the show, we know how Vecna became a part of The Upside Down and how that led to the connection to our world, otherwise known as the Mothergate; Eleven herself sent him there. But The Upside Down was already in existence, just waiting for a lord and commander in Stranger Things‘ world. Is it another dimension? Is it hell? Is it a science experiment gone very wrong? Well, it turns out that Stranger Things 5 will deliver all The Upside Down answers we seek. And, no, Stranger Things 5 won’t just pull The Upside Down’s lore out of a hat. Matt and Ross Duffer have known since season one everything there is to know about The Upside Down.

A recent article from Variety interview with Matt and Ross Duffer shares, “Going into the writers’ room, they knew the biggest questions they needed to answer were ‘about what the Upside Down was,’ Ross says. ‘Every season would be like, ‘Should we talk about it?’ And we’d go, ‘No, let’s wait.’ And then finally, we’re like, ‘Well, we have to now!’” It’s true, they really do have to now. But it sounds like explaining what The Upside Down finally lies at the forefront of the Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things 5 plans.

But the question is, will we get the full 25-page explanation of The Upside Down in Stranger Things 5? An article from Netflix teases, “There’s plenty more to look forward to, including intel about the mysterious Upside Down. Back in Season 1, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer wrote a 25-page document for Netflix that delves into the mythology of the cryptic alternate dimension. While some of that lore has already been unveiled, expect even more details to emerge in the final season.”

TWENTY FIVE PAGES? That’s a whole Upside Down short story, one we’d love to read. And it’s good to know this document has been around since season one. Sometimes, shows don’t really have plans for their big mysteries. And that makes the results we see on screen less engaging. But with a real plan behind it, we bet The Upside Down, its true meaning, and its origin story will thrill and fulfill us.

We guess we’ll find out when Stranger Things 5 releases November 26.
