Critical Role Campaign 4 kicked off with an unprecedent number of player characters—13 of them in total. So many players couldn’t possibly fit comfortably into one campaign… Unless it was a West Marches-style game of Dungeons & Dragons. This means that the players divide themselves into sub-tables, each playing out their own story but very much impacting the other tables and their tales. Before Critical Role Campaign 4 even began, new Game Master Brennan Lee Mulligan announced that this time around, Critical Role would be taking on a West Marches-style campaign and would contain three sub-tables: the Soldiers, the Seekers, and the Schemers. The Soldiers’ Table was revealed to us in episode three of Critical Role Campaign 4. But the Seekers and Schemers were announced a little differently, via a “Meet The Characters of Campaign 4” featurette released by Critical Role to catch us up on what’s been happening. So just who is a part of the Schemers’ Table in Critical Role Campaign 4? We must say, there are a few surprises. Let’s dive in.
Critical Role Campaign 4‘s Schemers’ Table consists of Halandil Fang played by Liam O’Brien, Bolaire Lathalia played by Taliesin Jaffe, Azune Nayar played by Luis Carazo, and Murray Mag’nesson played by Marisha Ray.
Murray and Bolaire, as part of the Schemers, we saw coming, but Azune and Hal are surprising choices for us!
Game Master Brennan Lee Mulligan was very clear that the table a player and actor are a part of are more about their taste in playstyle than their specific character type. Still, joining the Schemers does seem to point to a certain kind of personality. When it comes to being part of the Schemers’ Table of Critical Role Campaign 4, Brennan Lee Mulligan explains, “The Schemers’ table is very much set in intrigue, espionage, skullduggery, and relationships with each other and other NPCs and institutions and the machinations of power. Their adventuring looks like cloak and dagger. There are enemies right here in your hometown, and they are moving against you as we speak.”
We’re excited to see what kind of shenanigans the Schemers get up to together.
Hrm. Of all the tables, the characters of the Schemers’ Table have the least connection that we can see in Critical Role Campaign 4. Of course, all of the Schemers have a relationship to Thjazi Fang, but they don’t have a core mission that bonds them like the Soldiers, nor a shared experience like the Seekers.
If we had to connect all the Schemer characters, we would say they are all very invested in Dol-Makjar’s fate. Halandil Fang has finally built the performance space of his dreams and wants his family and friends to find joy in the place he loves. Murray Mag’nesson has settled down in the Penterveral, a magic school in Dol-Makjar, and doesn’t want any annoying bureaucrats to disrupt her space. Azune Nayar is a part of the Arcane Marshal, literally the security force of Dol-Makjar, and finds joy through connecting to its people and keeping them safe. Finally, Boliare Lathalia, who is literally a mask, is truly “alive” for the first time in his role as curator at the Archanade, a magical museum in Dol-Makjar, where he had never before had a home.
We feel this connection to Dol-Makjar unites the characters who are part of the Schemers’ Table, giving them a common ground to stand on as they adventure further in Critical Role Campaign 4.
We don’t yet know where the Schemers’ Table will set their story. But as we’ve just noted above, we suspect the Schemers will remain in Dol-Makjar during Critical Role Campaign 4‘s adventures.
As mentioned, we don’t officially know where the Schemers’ Table plot will go in Critical Role Campaign 4. But our educated guess is that it will involve rooting out the rot in Dol-Makjar and its institutions. We bet the Schemers’ Table will become heavily involved in figuring out the corruption in the Sundered Houses that’s currently infecting many different parts of Dol-Makjar.
So far, the Schemers’ Table has unofficially appeared in all of Critical Role Campaign 4‘s episodes, that’s episodes one through four.
Critical Role Campaign 4 premieres Thursdays at 7 pm PT on Beacon.tv and is streamed to Critical Role’s YouTube and Twitch channels at that time, with the VOD available for everyone the following Monday and podcast episodes available in two parts: the first one week after the premiere, and the second on the following Tuesday.
