Who Will Replace Amanda on ‘Will Trent’?

Now that we’ve had some time to sit back and digest everything that happened in Will Trent Season 4, it’s time to start thinking about what’s ahead for ABC’s crime dramedy. The series was renewed for Season 5 well ahead of that devastating finale, and the cast of the show certainly has their hopes for what might be in store after that major cliffhanger.

What we already know about the next season is that Will (Ramón Rodríguez) and Angie (Erika Christensen) will have formed a new quasi-family together after she was left widowed by Dr. Seth’s (Scott Foley) death and in need of help with her newborn, Edie. We also know that Faith (Iantha Richardson) is going to be leading the charge to uncover the darkest secrets associated with the big sex trafficking ring she’s uncovered, and Michael Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin) and Franklin (Kevin Daniels) will be lending a hand with that effort as well. There will also be some more crossover with the GBI and APD characters, as the departments forge a partnership that sees Will and Ormewood, along with Faith and Angie, team up.

On top of all of that, we also know that there will be someone new stepping into Amanda Wagner’s (Sonja Sohn) very snazzy and hard-to-fill shoes.

As coshowrunner Karine Rosenthal explained to TV Insider, “We will have a new deputy director of the GBI coming in. So, for the fans who assumed that we were grooming Appleyard [Jason Davis] for the position, he was more of a stepping stone. He might be back to help with some transition, but there will be a new person with a new dynamic for Will and Faith, and that’ll be interesting, and hopefully set up some new types of conflicts.”

What we don’t yet know, however, is who will take over the role…. or who will star as that new deputy director character. Considering what a familial bond Will had with Amanda, we have to imagine it’ll be a challenge for Will to accept a new boss, no matter who it is.
