The View had to call an audible for its first episode of 2022 after Whoopi Goldberg tested positive for COVID-19 over the holiday break, as relayed by her cohost Joy Behar at the top of Monday's show:
"Well, you know, they say there's no place like home for the holidays, and that's exactly where we are this year," the 79-year-old explained. "So, Happy New Year from all of our living rooms. As you can see we're back in boxes and doing the show remotely—hopefully for just a week. I'm praying that it's just a week, but you never know because this Omicron thing is all over the place."
"Whoopi unfortunately tested positive over the break, but she'll be back probably next week," Behar continued. "Since she's vaxxed and boosted, her symptoms have been very, very mild. But we're being super cautious here at The View."
Behar then welcomed in guest host Ana Navarro, who lost her mother in mid-December:
Best I can describe grief. It’s like ocean waves, can’t control or predict. At times, it’s relatively calm. Others, it hits like small, rhythmic waves. Then, at times forceful waves crash over you and almost pull you under. No choice but to let go and ride the waves.

RIP, mom. pic.twitter.com/7GovVvWfLU
This is not about politics or Party. It’s about life and death, sickness or health. It’s about life as we know it.

Covid’s back with a vengeance. Shame on those standing in the way of mandates for political theater. They need to stop the bullshit.
People, please get vaccinated.
Having just lost my mom, I can’t understand how people aren’t getting vaccines & boosters that can help protect our vulnerable loved ones.

My mom didn’t die of Covid, but like with +800,000 Americans who did, I couldn’t be w/her at the end. It’s heartbreaking.
Get vaccinated.
"Since losing my mom wasn't enough, and then having Christmas 10 days later wasn't enough, my father tested positive for COVID and wasn't able to come for Christmas or my birthday," Navarro said, adding that her father has recovered.
Along with Behar and Goldberg, The View's full-time panelists for the current season are Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin. During the segment, Hostin shared that she tested positive "right before Christmas" and remained isolated through the holidays.
