'Wicked' stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth reunite on stage

Idina Menzel recently made her return to Broadway in Redwood. However, those in the audience last night got an extra-special surprise: a Wicked reunion. That's right, Kristin Chenoweth joined her former co-star to sing "For Good."

"Thanks, friend. I’ll never get through that song without crying. You have truly changed me for good," Menzel wrote on Instagram about the reunion. "Thank you for supporting Redwood Musical and lighting up our stage with your brilliance, your humanity, inner and outer sparkle, and your insanely gorgeous diamond studded jumpsuit. I love you."

On stage, Chenoweth expressed, "I saw this show tonight, y'all, I'm not okay. They should charge extra as people leave; you'd make more money. I'm just saying, it was very, very touching. I'm really proud of my friend."

She continued to add, "Both of us have sung this song with other great singers, but I just gotta say, there's no place like home, girl."

The two originated the roles of Glinda and Elphaba in the 2003 Broadway production of Wicked. They also delighted fans with a cameo in 2024's Wicked film adaptation, which starred Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The four of them sang "One Short Day" in the Emerald City.

What makes this reunion even sweeter was that it was all for a great cause, as the performance raised money for Broadway Cares.

Menzel and Chenoweth were very supportive when it came to passing the torch to Erivo and Grande. They even all did an interview together with Entertainment Weekly.

"I will say that I felt very, very supported by both of you, actually. I felt given the room and space and lots of encouragement," Erivo commented before turning to Menzel and saying, "After you saw the film, that voice note [you sent me], I still play it sometimes."

"The original Broadway cast recording was my lifeline growing up, and that was deeply intertwined in my DNA my whole life. It was always something that brought me great comfort and happiness. I would listen to it when I was nervous for something or sad about something. It was always a safe space for me," Grande explained. "Every single thing [in the film] was a piece of Ozian history from the books and what's been before us — The Wizard of Oz and Wicked, your Wicked."

Chenoweth shared, "When I was cast, [Glinda] was very much a side character, and then it developed into this love story between the two women. It wasn't always meant to be that. Were you ever surprised by that? At first, I kind of was. I was like, 'Wow, it's evolving into that.'"

Menzel answered, "I think I was too self-absorbed and worrying about if I was going to be fired that I was just so happy to have someone that was always there to see me and to support me. I really think art imitates life, and you're able to find each other and trust each other and see each other for who you really are."

As for the legacy of Wicked, Menzel sums it up perfectly: "What I love so much about it is, especially in this time that we're living in, is that women can be really powerful and unapologetic about it. [They’re] more beautiful because they speak their mind and they're ferocious and powerful. I love that that's celebrated."

Chenoweth concluded, "The legacy just continues. That's a big word, but it will continue with this movie, it continues with our show. It's a once in a lifetime legacy."

You can see Menzel in Redwood through August. Wicked: For Good will be released in theaters on November 21.
