1992’s X-Men: The Animated Series was a defining childhood experience for many, and when it ended in 1997, it was kind of the end of an era. Now, Disney is bringing the series back with a revival, and we finally have a release date and a new trailer.
Marvel Entertainment, a wholly owned subsidiary of Disney, released the first proper trailer for X-Men ‘97, the follow-up series to the classic X-Men: The Animated Series. The trailer opens with a clip from the old series, right at the end of the show’s run, before transitioning to all-new footage from the new series.
We see some establishing shots of New York, and hear Cyclops talking about how important it is for the X-Men and mutants as a whole to stay vigilant. After the death of Professor X, it seems that mutant/human relations haven’t been going so great, and there are protests in the streets calling for mutants to be persecuted and removed from society.
“No matter how dark it is,” Storm follows up, “We must believe in each other.”
We get some cool shots of everyone’s favorite mutant heroes suiting up, and then the big reveal of the whole gang – including Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Beast, Gambit, and more – in the X-Men’s signature jet. It’s a very good trailer, and it looks almost exactly like the old series from the 90’s.
The release date for X-Men ‘97 is revealed to be March 20, 2023 at the end of the trailer, alongside a reminder that the new series will be released exclusively on Disney+. That’s not surprising, of course, given that’s where almost all Marvel stuff ends up these days anyway, but it is a little bit disappointing that we won’t be getting the new series on Saturday mornings like we used to.
