The beloved comedy 'Pee-wee’s Big Adventure' just hit its 40th anniversary. The film not only cemented Pee-wee Herman as a pop culture icon but also marked an early triumph for its then up-and-coming director, Tim Burton. Now, in honor of the milestone, Pee-wee’s famous red Schwinn bike is on display at The Alamo.
If you’re puzzled about why a prop bike is on display at a famous historical landmark, then you probably haven’t seen 'Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.' In the movie, Pee-wee embarks on a quest to find his prized bicycle after hearing it’s hidden in the basement of The Alamo. He makes the trip only to discover The Alamo doesn’t have a basement at all. The hunt goes on, because otherwise the film would have wrapped up in about 20 minutes.
The actual bike sold at auction this past May for $125,000, and it’s now proudly on display at The Alamo.
For now, the bike rests in its temporary home, but once the new Alamo Visitor Center and Museum opens in 2027, Pee-wee’s ride will be there for good. And yes, there’s also the “Alamo Cat” posing with a tiny version of the bike—because why wouldn’t you want to see that?
If you’re planning one last summer getaway, consider a trip to San Antonio—swing by The Alamo and catch a glimpse of Pee-wee’s iconic bike.
