Countless anime shows of various genres dominated throughout the 1990s. Such titles include Pokémon, Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop, Dragon Ball Z, and Detective Conan. But one series that certainly deserves to be on the list is Yu Yu Hakusho. For those unaware, it’s a martial arts anime where a teenager becomes a Spirit Detective. He and his friends investigate supernatural occurrences and take on rogue demons.
Naturally, the anime and its source manga introduce audiences to numerous memorable characters. A majority of them are impressively strong warriors, given the show’s genre and premise. But which of these individuals are considered the top five in terms of power?
Surprisingly, the Number Five spot goes to Yu Yu Hakusho‘s protagonist, Yusuke Urameshi. This placement is due to his role coming with a hero learning curve. Nevertheless, Yusuke was always ready to tackle any challenge with his repertoire of combat techniques. His moveset included his iconic Spirit Gun, Spirit Gun Barrage, Spirit Wave, and Demon Gun. Plus, he had the additional edge of being descended from a powerful demon.
Coming in next is Mukuro, one of the Demon Kings presiding over Makai. Mukuro’s strength relates to her temperament, and she’s greatly inclined to anger. This aspect means she is incredibly dangerous and merciless during a fight. She also once defeated protagonist Hiei, easily overcoming his Dragon of the Darkness Flame technique. And, according to her, she was only using half of her strength during their battle.
Being one of Makai’s Three Kings, Yomi is naturally a powerful individual. He was once a minion of Yoko Kurama but was left alone following an accident. Yomi went about honing his skills afterward, thus making him a dangerous threat. He wields powerful attacks such as Demon Absorption Wall and Tornado Energy Blast.
The position of the second strongest Yu Yu Hakusho character goes to Raizen. Despite being Makai’s third demonic ruler, he carries the appearance of a starved man. He stopped feeding off humans after developing feelings for a human woman. But Raizen defeated Yusuke with little to no problem, regardless of his weakened state. It is mind-boggling to think what he was like at full strength.
Enki was an ally to Yusuke and his friends during a fighting tournament in Makai. He possesses the ability to mask his energy, thus making his full power a mystery. Nevertheless, he took on many of the heroes’ foes and stood toe-to-toe against Yomi. He even won the tournament and became the new and only, ruling King of Makai! Which is why Enki is considered the strongest Yu Yu Hakusho character ever.
I agree on why these Yu Yu Hakusho characters got their rankings. Still, it shocks me that Yusuke is Number Five, but I get it. Just because he’s the protagonist doesn’t automatically make him Number One. Again, I won’t argue this list because the reasons make sense.
I remember watching the first arc of Yu Yu Hakusho on Cartoon Network on weeknights. Yet I cannot remember if it was during the Toonami or Adult Swim blocks. Nevertheless, I recall enjoying and following the show until it disappeared for some reason. I sadly never got back into it, but I’ve heard it still holds up today. Maybe I’ll try rewatching the series if I find the time to.
