Zendaya defends 'Euphoria' Rue-Jules-Elliot love triangle in Season 2

Zendaya is in a seemingly very secure relationship with Tom Holland in real life, but her Euphoria character hasn't yet found the same romantic bliss.

Euphoria returns to HBO on Sunday (Jan. 9), and "Rules" stans are anxious to see how the complicated relationship between Rue (Zendaya) and Jules (Hunter Schafer) goes next.

The highly anticipated sophomore season is introducing at least one roadblock, and his name is Elliot, played by burgeoning musician Dominic Fike.

"There were a lot of conversations over the years about where the show was going to go and what it was going to evolve into, and I remember when [showrunner] Sam [Levinson] first kind of talked about the idea of this Elliot character, I wasn’t feeling it — as someone who ships ‘Rules’ to the bitter end," Zendaya recently told Variety. "And I was like, 'whoa, whoa, whoa, what are we doing here?'"

"But, in retrospect, and also as someone who understands where the show needs to go and what needs to happen for these characters, it’s crucial that Elliot exist and that he be the person that is honestly the catalyst for a lot of things that just have to happen," the historic Emmy winner continued.

Schafer added: "I think I was in a similar boat to Z when I first heard about this ‘Elliot boy.' But, you know, as we saw more of what it brought into the story and the script, it became a more interesting and exciting prospect, and once Dom came on board, he made it a lot of fun."

The first season finale, which aired all the way back in August 2019, saw Jules and Rue planning to leave town together — only for Jules to board the train and Rue to stay behind. Distraught, Rue relapses, and we were left wondering if she had overdosed.

The second season trailer from December shows that Rue is very much alive but still very much spiraling. Watch below.
