Actress Zendaya has recently opened up in an interview about whether “Euphoria” will be coming to a close. The series star, who plays troubled addict Rue Bennett, has opened up about whether the HBO series will have its swan song come season 3, which premieres next Sunday, April 12, four years after going off the air.
The actress recently made an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” where she was asked about the show. When asked if the upcoming third season of the series will be the last, Zendaya said, according to Variety, “I think so, yeah.” The actress also added, “That closure is coming,” after Barrymore had rephrased her question, and added that she needed to know the “mindframe” before watching the series.
The statements alone seem to imply that the third season of the series will be the last. Zendaya herself is mostly firm that season 3 will be the last season of “Euphoria.” Lately, it has been hinted that the characters of the series will be going through their final story arc in season 3. One hint that has been especially apparent is that all the high schoolers are adults in the story.
If you are wondering why it took four literal years to get a new season of television, you are not alone. Between the Hollywood strikes, schedule conflicts, and creator Sam Levinson taking a massive, critically panned detour with “The Idol,” the production timeline for this show has been an absolute mess. Then, of course, there is the Zendaya factor!
Our girl has been booked and busy, dominating the box office with massive hits like “Dune: Part Two” and “Challengers.” Trying to pin down a global movie star to film a grueling, emotionally draining television schedule is no easy feat. With the tragic passing of beloved cast member Angus Cloud and the departure of Barbie Ferreira, it is understandable why the creative team needed to hit the pause button and recalibrate the entire story.
The saving grace for the upcoming season is the time jump. Pretending these actors, who are now pushing thirty, are still worrying about SAT scores and prom would have been a tough pill to swallow. Moving the characters out of high school and into the real world opens up a massive sandbox of new problems, dynamics, and (undoubtedly) terrible life choices.
Whether this truly is the end or just the closing of a major chapter, the impact of the series is undeniable. It changed the landscape of modern television, spawned a million makeup tutorials, and gave us some of the most visceral performances of the decade. Zendaya winning multiple Emmy awards for her portrayal of Rue wasn’t an accident; it was a testament to the raw, uncomfortable, and deeply human emotion she brought to the screen.
HBO’s Head of Drama, Francesca Orsi, basically admitted that while “nothing is over until it’s over,” per Deadline, discussions have heavily leaned toward season 3 being the final curtain call. So, as we brace ourselves for whatever chaotic, glitter-soaked tragedy is coming our way after this four-year hiatus, we can at least take comfort in knowing there is a plan.
While not officially confirmed by the studio, Zendaya and Orsi’s statements seem to hint that the series will come to its conclusion in season 3. After all, the actors in the series do have other commitments to other projects. Zendaya, for example, is set to return as MJ Watson and Chani in the upcoming “Dune” and “Spider-Man” films, respectively. Grab your tissues and prepare your stress balls, cause this season will be even more intense than the first two.
