There was, perhaps, a fleeting moment in time in which Zoe Saldana winning Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars didn't feel inevitable. It had nothing to do with her, though. Karla Sofia Gascon's problematic remarks on social media tanked any hopes "Emilia Perez" had for a big Oscar night. Some wondered if the toxic cloud emanating from this event could poison Saldana's juggernaut of a campaign. When the Academy got around to handing out their awards, the answer proved a definitive "no."
Saldana, who garnered a reputation for water works during the award season, seemed primed to turn the spigot on for the waterworks as early as Conan O'Brien's monologue. While she was emotional, especially when talking about her grandmother, it wasn't necessarily as teary a speech as one might have imagined. Perhaps she had enough speeches on the circuit to cultivate a sense of composure while giving award speeches.
Best known for her work in massive blockbuster movies that bury her in CGI or makeup, Saldana got a chance to showcase her acting skills in "Emilia Perez." Also, she probably netted her cohorts a Best Original Song win through her dancing, but that's a story for another day.
