30 for 30 shorts: The Billion Dollar Game

One of the main draws of the men’s NCAA tournament is the chance for smaller schools to upset a perennial favorite. However, back in 1989, many of the bigger conferences didn’t feel the need to give smaller chances to participate. This logic was flipped upside down after the 1989 showdown between the number one seed Georgetown Hoyas and the number sixteen seed Princeton Tigers. The Hoyas were led by Alonzo Mourning and were favorites to make the Final Four, making them a huge favorite against Princeton. Yet, Princeton’s coach Pete Carril orchestrated an outstanding coaching job. And while they came up short 50-49, this documentary touches on an outstanding game that showed Cinderellas can still happen in the tournament.
