After months of anticipation, it’s finally that time of year again: football season. Between college and the pros, we’re treated to live games most nights of the week, but if you’re looking for even more football to fill your schedule, it’s time to log into Hulu. The streaming service has a diverse mix of football-themed TV shows and documentary series – and we’ve highlighted some of its best options in the list below.

If you love football but aren’t a Hulu subscriber, there are plenty of reasons to consider signing up. Not only can you find acclaimed football shows in Hulu’s on-demand library, but you can also subscribe to Hulu + Live TV to watch hours of live college and NFL football every week.

Algiers, America

“Algiers, America” is a five-part documentary series that debuted on Hulu in April. It follows the football team at Edna Karr High School, a predominantly Black school in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans. The squad is on a quest to win its fifth state championship in recent years under the leadership of head coach Brice Brown. But off the field, the players must cope with the horrifying realities of gun violence, which has claimed the lives of loved ones and community members. “Algiers, America” is available to watch on-demand with a standard Hulu plan.

Ballers

In “Ballers,” Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars as Spencer Strasmore, an ex-NFL player making a career change to work on the financial management side of football. Set in Miami, the comedy-drama series depicts the highs and lows of life as a pro athlete, both during and after playing. Other series regulars include John David Washington, Omar Miller, and Donovan Carter, all of whom appear as current or former NFL players, and Rob Corddry as a financial advisor who works with Strasmore. “Ballers” originally aired on HBO and is now available to watch on-demand with a Hulu plan or the Disney Bundle.

Friday Night Lights

Inspired by a book and, later, a movie, “Friday Night Lights” is a sports drama set in the fictional small town of Dillon, Texas. It tells the story of the Dillon Panthers, the town’s beloved high school football team, as it experiences exhilarating wins and heartbreaking losses – both on and off the field. The team is led by head coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler), whose wife, Tami (Connie Britton), is also an important figure in Dillon. Over five seasons, the show followed many of Coach Taylor’s talented (but often troubled) players, including Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) and Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford). “Friday Night Lights” is available in Hulu’s on-demand library.

The Game

As a spin-off of “Girlfriends,” “The Game” is a sitcom that revolves around a group of wives and girlfriends of pro football players. In the middle of it all is Melanie Barnett (Tia Mowry), a medical student who follows her boyfriend, Derwin Davis (Pooch Hall), to Southern California, where he’s been recruited as a backup on the San Diego Sabers football team. After arriving, Melanie is thrust into the team’s inner circle of players and their partners, where she quickly learns about the harsh realities of dating a professional athlete. You can watch all nine seasons of “The Game” on-demand on Hulu.

Hard Knocks

“Hard Knocks” is an HBO documentary series that follows an NFL team – either in training camp or during part of the regular season. In the most recent edition, the show tags along with the New York Jets as they prepare for the 2023 season (in which Aaron Rodgers was supposed to take the helm as quarterback). Liev Schreiber has narrated the show since it premiered in 2001 but stepped aside in 2007 when Paul Rudd narrated the season that featured his favorite team, the Kansas City Chiefs. You can watch “Hard Knocks” on-demand with a Hulu plan and the Max add-on.

Inside the College Football Playoff

Over the course of four seasons, this ESPN Plus Original Series has chronicled the run-up to college football’s biggest game of the year: the College Football Playoff National Championship. In the latest season, the show gives a behind-the-scenes look at the final four teams – Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State and TCU – as they prepare for the semi-finals. In the later episodes, the focus narrows to the championship game, eventually capturing the Bulldogs’ impressive win over the Horned Frogs. “Inside the College Football Playoff” is available on-demand with the Disney Bundle (which includes Hulu, ESPN Plus and Disney Plus).

The League

Set in Chicago, “The League” is a sitcom that premiered on FX in 2009. It revolves around a close-knit group of friends – including Pete Eckhart (Mark Duplass), Rodney Ruxin (Nick Kroll), Kevin MacArthur (Stephen Rannazzisi) and Andre Nowzick (Paul Scheer) – and their long-running fantasy football league. The crew are desperate to beat each other in the annual competition, often sabotaging and humiliating one another in pursuit of the coveted “Shiva” trophy. The series also tracks the league members’ everyday lives as they navigate work, love and family issues. You’ll find all seven seasons of “The League” on-demand on Hulu.

Man in the Arena: Tom Brady

In this ESPN Plus series, Tom Brady looks back on his accomplished career, giving a play-by-play retelling of his victories and setbacks. The show begins during Brady’s days as a backup quarterback on the New England Patriots, retracing his promotion to starting QB when Drew Bledsoe was sidelined with an injury. As the series progresses, it highlights other notable moments in Brady’s career and personal life, including his 10 Super Bowl appearances, his marriage to Gisele Bündchen, his involvement in Deflategate and his eventual move to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. To watch “Man in the Arena: Tom Brady,” you’ll need the Disney Bundle with Hulu and ESPN Plus.

NFL PrimeTime on ESPN Plus

“NFL PrimeTime” debuted on ESPN in 1987, and it’s still going strong today (although it’s been streaming on ESPN Plus since 2019). The weekly show, which is currently hosted by Chris Berman and Booger McFarland, recaps the week’s games, including highlights, analysis and commentary. It also features the latest news and updates from around the league. “NFL PrimeTime” airs live at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday nights throughout the NFL season and is available on-demand until the following Wednesday. You can watch it with the Disney Bundle, which includes Hulu and ESPN Plus.

Our Time: Oklahoma State Football

In 2020, ESPN Plus launched this multi-episode documentary series, which captured the story of the Oklahoma State Cowboys football team led by coach Mike Gundy. The show followed the players and staff as they prepared to return to campus in a high-stress time, as the COVID-19 pandemic and social justice issues were at the front of many Americans’ minds. Over 19 episodes, Gundy and his players navigate the uncertainty of a football season like they’d never experienced before – and one in which there were high expectations for the Cowboys. Tune into “Our Time: Oklahoma State Football” on-demand on Hulu with the Disney Plus bundle.

Saturdays in the South

Directed by Fritz Mitchell, “Saturdays in the South” is an eight-part documentary series that tells the story of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) – all the way from its earliest beginnings in 1869 until its 150th-anniversary celebration in 2019. It covers key milestones over the conference’s illustrious history, including the impact of legendary players and coaches like John Heisman, Bear Bryant, Archie Manning, Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson, Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban.
