The Pittsburgh Pirates (10-15) are not having a good year. But...neither are the Los Angeles Angels (11-12). Already, the Pirates have won the first two games in the April 2025 matchup and are gunning for a clean sweep of the Angels series.

For tonight's game, it doesn't look good for the home team. The Angels didn't make aggressive moves to bolster their lineup in the offseason, and their bullpen remains inconsistent. Now the chickens have come home to roost in the 2025 season, and the Angels are an abysmal 3-7 in their last ten games. Big Yikes.

While the Pirates pulled the same strategy, and lack any semblance of an offense that produces hits and runs in 2025, they might have it in them to beat the Angels one more time tonight.

There might be a shred of hope for the Pirates to carry themselves out of the bottom of the NL Central.

Key Players You Need To Watch on the Los Angeles Angels

  • Mike Trout – Just 23 games into the 2025 regular season, Trout leads the Angels with 8 home runs and 16 RBIs. Despite a modest .169 batting average, he maintains a .276 OBP and .470 SLG — he's still an offensive powerhouse.
  • Logan O'Hoppe – The Pirates' catcher has emerged as a steady offensive weapon for the struggling lineup, batting .284 with 5 home runs and a .827 OPS across 19 games, offering much-needed consistency for the team.
  • Kyren Paris – The second baseman is known for his hitting and speed, providing the Pirates with a (much needed) combo role player; garnering 5 home runs, 5 stolen bases, and a team-best .917 OPS, supported by a .348 OBP and .569 SLG over 21 games.

Key players You Need To Watch on the Pittsburgh Pirates

  • Oneil Cruz – The Pirates’ most best offensive force so far in 2025, but that isn't saying much. Cruz leads the team with 6 home runs and a .355 OBP, .519 SLG, and .874 OPS stat line.
  • Bryan Reynolds – A solid cornerstone of the Pittsburgh lineup, Reynolds leads the team in hits (26) and RBIs (13), providing consistent production that the Pirates have had a lot of trouble replicating.
  • Andrew Heaney – On the mound, Heaney has emerged as the Pirates’ 2025 ace starting pitcher with a stellar 1.72 ERA, 31 strikeouts, and a 0.77 WHIP over 5 starts.

Who’s Winning the Los Angeles Angels vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Series?

Unfortunately for the Pirates, this game is most likely going to the Angels. It's usually unheard of for an away team to perform a clean sweep of the home team in a 3-game series. According to the MLB 2024 data, only 10% of road teams completed 3-game sweeps in the regular season.

The odds are close, but I don't think the Pirates can pull this off.
