One of the newer Olympic events, 3x3 basketball was just added in the last summer Games. A mix of traditional basketball and street basketball, this sport sees three players take on three players in a high-energy game. In Paris, teams will play at Place de la Concorde from July 30 to Aug. 5.

The women’s Team USA basketball team took the gold medal home in Tokyo and could do the same in Paris. The men’s Team USA basketball team didn’t qualify for the inaugural year in Tokyo (Latvia took the gold), but is expected to make a strong showing in Paris. It was announced in 2017 that 3x3 basketball would become an Olympic sport in 2020. However, due to the 2020 Olympic Games being delayed, the sport didn’t debut until 2021 in Tokyo.

Can NBA players play in 3x3 Olympics?

Yes, NBA players can play 3x3 basketball in the Olympics. However, they are required to earn International Basketball Federation points to qualify. They earn these through other 3x3 events, and many NBA players don’t have the time to participate in these events, which is why most players on the men’s 3x3 Olympic team are not NBA players.
