Alysa Liu made the United States proud with her successful stint in the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. The figure skating star took the world by storm not only with her historic success at the Games but also with her bubbly, charismatic personality.
Liu wore a big smile throughout the Olympics, despite being significantly sleep-deprived. The 20-year-old handled every interview with grace and genuine charm, making her even more admirable.
On the ice, Liu was a dominant force. She helped lead Team USA to a gold medal in the team event. She then doubled her gold tally with an incredible first-place finish in the individual competition.
Liu returned to the United States shortly after the end of the Winter Games. She received a warm welcome from fans after landing at the San Francisco International Airport.
Liu, who was born in Clovis, California, recently had to address a misconception about her personal life. Specifically, there were questions about her hometown. The reigning World Figure Skating champion had to clear the air by posting a message on social media.
“I grew up in Oakland yall lol google is often wrong about me,” Liu wrote in a TikTok comment. “I will say my family moved around a lot, damn near every 2 years. So besides Oakland we have lived in san pablo richmond antioch albany even emeryville at some point. I’ve spent 80% of my life in Oakland, still living there rn.”
As Liu pointed out, there is some misinformation out there about where she was raised. She clarified that Oakland is her hometown, and not Richmond. While both are located in the Bay Area, they are two distinct cities.
Oakland is proud to have Liu as a longtime resident. So much so that the city recently announced that it is “planning a community-wide celebration” to honor Liu and her tremendous success in the Olympics.
The city government has not provided the full details of the celebration, but thousands of Oakland natives are expected to join the festivities to pay homage to Liu.
