United States figure skater Alysa Liu took over on the world stage at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics last month. The 20-year-old skater went into this year's Olympics as one of the favorites to take home the gold medal in figure skating, and she did just that.
Liu left Italy with a pair of gold medals, as she helped the U.S. win gold in the team figure skating event, and she finished first in the women's single skating as well.
This was not the first time that Liu had taken home a gold medal at an international event. She was a world champion, Grand Prix Final champion and World Team Trophy champion in 2025, in addition to several other accomplishments early in her career.
After her incredible performance at the Winter Olympics, figure skating fans around the world were excited to see Liu compete at the 2026 ISU Figure Skating World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.
However, on Saturday, it was reported by Dave Skretta of the Associated Press that Liu had withdrawn from the world championships, which will take place March 24-29.
On Sunday, Liu sent a message on her Instagram story about this major decision to not compete in the 2026 Worlds.
"Hellooo as some of yall already know, I withdrew from Worlds. There's been a lot of exciting things happening since my return from Milan, so I'm taking some time for that. I will be cheering everyone on from afar see yall next season!!" she said.
This decision came as a surprise to many who had hoped to see the two-time Olympic gold medalist compete in Prague.
However, as she will no longer partake in Worlds, fans will have to wait to see Liu back on the ice when the 2026-27 figure skating season begins in late summer.
