Amber Glenn may have had a commendable Milano Cortina campaign, but fans aren’t ready to catch a break and are already concerned about the next.
At 26, Glenn’s group event performance at the Milan Winter Games was crucial for Team USA’s gold run. She’s one of the few female figure skaters in the world who can successfully land a triple Axel. However, fans on Reddit are concerned that her age and training methods may not allow her to compete further.
“People are saying it would be difficult for Amber Glenn to compete at the next Olympics at 30”, one fan posted. “Is it purely because of the age she would be, or instead the amount of years spent training at a high intensity?”
While most agreed that the age is one matter at hand, the rest also named other skaters who made a comeback after 30, but their jumps were simply not as they used to be. However, one fan pointed out an interesting point.
“There’s been some really interesting studies over the years that indicate high-level athletes don’t necessarily lose their athletic ability/skill as they age (up to around age 40)”, they wrote. “But rather the accumulated effect of injuries adds up in their late 20s-30s, impeding their athletic performance.”
And another one agreed. “Yes, it is significantly different, and way more recovery time is required after each practice. Even in ice dance, where skaters don’t jump (so less joint damage over time), most retire slightly after 30 because it’s so physically hard”, they wrote. Moreover, Glenn herself acknowledged the matter.
The 26-year-old icon is well aware of the strain that skating puts on the body with advancing age. On speaking about the 2030 Olympics, she admitted that her body holding up till now is a matter of luck. And she’ll have to evaluate her mental and physical state if she plans to compete next.
“Well, I’ll be 30. I’m lucky my body is holding itself together right now — honestly, it barely is”, said Glenn while speaking to Olympics.com. “I will reevaluate after the season’s over and see how I’m doing physically and mentally. I am not opposed to doing one last season hoorah, just for fun and seeing, ‘Hey, let’s see if I can do a quad.”
However, the 3-time US Champion will enter the 2026 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Prague as a title defender. While Glenn’s next Olympic plans are uncertain, she’ll have her hands busy from March 24 to 29.
But do you think she’ll take to the ice in the 2030 Olympics?
