Lewis Hamilton is in a tight spot at the moment. The seven-time world champion is currently facing one of the biggest performance slumps of his career. The 40-year-old’s stint at Scuderia Ferrari has failed to match expectations. Now, former F1 Supremo Bernie Ecclestone has pinpointed the embarrassing aspect of the situation.

Ferrari signed Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season even before the previous season began. The Italian team announced the deal in early 2024, shocking the entire paddock. Hamilton was seen as the one who could finally bring glory back to Maranello. The Prancing Horse expected to get some valuable input from the seven-time world champion.

Unfortunately, this has not been the case. Lewis Hamilton’s rookie campaign at the Scuderia has been disappointing. The British driver has failed to clinch a single podium finish. Though, he did win the sprint race in China. Things have fallen to such a low that Hamilton has even called himself useless, asking Ferrari to find a replacement.

Bernie Ecclestone shared his views on what seems to be the most embarrassing part of this fiasco. The 94-year-old claimed that Ferrari had hoped that Lewis Hamilton would do anything that could get the Italian team back to the top step of the podium. Unfortunately, this has not been the case. Ecclestone highlighted that this in-turn only increased the disappointment within Maranello.

Unfortunately the wrong people were chosen. You need someone to bring some people…The most embarrassing thing, in my opinion, for Lewis and Ferrari is that they thought he could do all the things that were necessary. You must be disappointed that what was supposed to be delivered was not delivered.

Lewis Hamilton risks being ‘forgotten’ in F1

Lewis Hamilton is undoubtedly an all-time great in Formula 1. The Briton is statistically the most successful driver, with seven world titles and over 100 race wins. However, the Hamilton fans are currently seeing at Ferrari is appearing to be nothing more than a shadow of his former self.

Bernie Ecclestone asserted that Lewis Hamilton was now facing the risk of being completely forgotten in F1. The former F1 Supremo reckoned that if Hamilton continued for another season or two, fans will simply forget about his past achievements, and only focus on his disappointing run at Maranello. Ecclestone just had one advice to give to the 40-year-old, he insisted that the F1 legend should just retire by the end of this year.

The danger that – if he continues for another year or a year and a half and hasn’t gotten better by then – people will forget him and his achievements… He should stop.

Bernie Ecclestone explained

The 94-year-old made it clear that the Ferrari driver was simply tired of being in the sport for almost twenty years and had other priorities in his life now. Ecclestone reckoned that Lewis Hamilton had indeed lost his focus recently.

You’re getting tired, and Formula 1 is no longer the only thing in his life. I think he’s lost his focus. Twenty years is a long time and we now have a lot of young drivers in F1.

Bernie Ecclestone added

Certainly, Lewis Hamilton’s struggles seem to be in a never-ending loop at Maranello. No matter what the 40-year-old tries to do, he is unable to bring the results Ferrari hoped to achieve. However, the Tifosi would hope that the second half of the season fares better for the seven-time world champion.
