'Can’t Do Much,' F1 Pundit Rules out Max Verstappen from Home Win Prospects at Dutch GP

Max Verstappen will be the driver to watch at his home race at the Dutch GP. Verstappen has endured a difficult outing in the recent race weekends because of Red Bull’s disappointing pace. However, the Dutchman has given it his all and is trying to score the best results possible. The upcoming race weekend could have rainy conditions, as F1 pundit Peter Windsor issues a disappointing statement on the local hero’s winning chances.

The Zandvoort circuit is one of the trickiest circuits in the F1 calendar, because of its multiple elevation changes and tight corners. Still, Max Verstappen has emerged successful in his home race multiple times in the past. However, the 2025 season might be a different story as Verstappen is struggling big time ahead of the race weekend.

As such, Peter Windsor firmly believes that Max Verstappen wouldn’t be able to do much with his dominant pace at the Dutch GP. This would, in turn, bring the entire pack closer to one another and put forth exciting racing action. However, Windsor asserted that the race could be boring as McLaren would likely dominate on the track, excelling at the slow corners and traction while turning.

Zandvoort’s a good example, where there are not many nice corners, where guys like Max can’t do much, and it’ll bring the field quite tightly together. It’s a bit of a small circuit with not a lot going on. McLaren will be good on the slow corners and traction and turning, which is a bit boring, isn’t it? Because you can’t really see it.

Peter Windsor told GPblog

Peter Windsor further guessed that Lewis Hamilton would drive in the vicinity of Charles Leclerc on race day and wouldn’t dwindle much on track. Moreover, Yuki Tsunoda wouldn’t be that far behind Max Verstappen in his home race, as Windsor noted that the track isn’t that difficult to drive around. Still, the 73-year-old declared that Verstappen could score good results only if he lucks out with the safety car and strategy.

Guys like Lewis will be near, Charles, and normal Yuki won’t be that far behind Max. Because it’s not a difficult circuit, as I said. And as a result, somebody like Max, if things go right in terms of safety car, strategy, all that stuff, he can have a good result at Zandvoort in front of his home crowd.

Peter Windsor claims rain ‘won’t help’ Max Verstappen succeed at Dutch GP

Max Verstappen is known to excel during rainy and treacherous conditions on the track. However, the FIA has suspended race starts this year when the situation seems to worsen. Verstappen hasn’t been a fan of this decision from the governing body this year, as he was also joined by Lewis Hamilton and others. Despite the Dutchman’s excellence on rainy circuits, Peter Windsor firmly believes he might not luck out this time.

Peter Windsor asserted that if the circuit was really wet, the race would likely not take place until the conditions seemed dry enough. And even if the race started in semi-wet conditions, it wouldn’t take long to quickly dry up the track and return to racing on slicks. Either way, it would be great for McLaren as Windsor emphasized that even rainy conditions wouldn’t help the 27-year-old succeed at his home race.

If it really is wet… What does that mean anyway? If it’s really wet, they’re not going to race, are they? And if it’s semi-wet, it’s always going to dry out. And if it is going to dry out, it’s always going to be good for McLaren. I think the days of saying, ‘well, that’s going to be good for someone like Max’ are probably over.

Peter Windsor noted

The 2025 season only has ten races left, and Max Verstappen is trailing the driver’s title lead to Oscar Piastri by 69 points. It seems that the Dutchman wouldn’t be in the mix to win the title this year. Still, Verstappen has faith in Red Bull and hopes to emerge as a winning force in the 2026 season and return to his winning ways.
