Charles Leclerc to evaluate Ferrari future after first rounds of 2026

For both new and long-term viewers of Formula 1, Charles Leclerc and Ferrari are seen as an inseparable duo.

Since joining F1 in 2018 with Sauber, making the jump to Ferrari the following year, Leclerc’s objective has not only been to win a title – but to win a title with Ferrari. As it stands, this is still his preference.

At the same time, the Monegasque will not give the Maranello squad infinite chances to produce a title-winning car. Depending on how the Scuderia begin the 2026 season, Leclerc could be a key player in the driver market.

Leclerc grows impatient to fight for Championships

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has already given a few suggestions on what the beginning of 2026 will look like. The Frenchman believes the pecking order will evolve rapidly as teams bring upgrades throughout the year.

Vasseur argues that reliability will be the first priority – with performance only coming into focus once teams check certain boxes in testing and the first few rounds.

To some degree, this is a logical expectation. Particularly in testing, an emphasis on getting laps on the board and identifying any mechanical failures is likely.

However, this level of caution should not be overstated. Reports of Mercedes and Red Bull’s engine solution for 2026 are an early reminder of the risks teams will take with the new regulations.

Should Ferrari get off to a slow start next year, climbing the grid will not be easy. Not only are rivals more resourceful than ever, but the learning curve with next year’s machines will be steep.

Because of this, it is understood that Leclerc will spend the first few rounds of the 2026 season assessing Ferrari’s situation.

Once the early stages of the year are complete, likely after round 6 in Miami, his next steps will become clearer. If the 28-year-old does not believe the Maranello squad are realistic contenders, alternatives can and will be considered.

His manager Nicholas Todt eluded to this a few months ago, candidly expressing that the time is now for Leclerc to have a a winning car. Ideally, this would be with Ferrari. That said, after spending seven seasons with the Italian team, Leclerc can no longer afford to be romantic.

Pragmatism is the new order of business, and so being in the best package possible is the priority.

In parallel to this, multiple top teams are understood to be monitoring the Ferrari driver’s situation.

A rare chance for Leclerc

Throughout the field, virtually every team and driver will be in talks next season. Even drivers with contracts that don’t expire in 2026, most notably Verstappen, will have the freedom to entertain their options.

Leclerc falls under this category but, unlike the Dutchman, does not have four World Championships under his belt. Of course, at 28, there is no reason why the Monegasque cannot continue in Formula 1 for another decade.

On paper, this would suggest there is no need for panic if Ferrari are not contenders in 2026.

Then again, next year will shape F1 until the next regulation change in 2030. Unlike 2019-2025, when it was never feasible for Leclerc to join the likes of Mercedes or Red Bull, there are likely to be vacancies in 2026.

Given that next year is when most contracts expire, making the right decision is potentially career-defining. This is why, perhaps for the first time, Leclerc will not be a spectator when moves are happening across the paddock.

This puts the pressure on Fred Vasseur and Ferrari to return to their former glory.
