Christian Horner claims rivals catching up to Red Bull was ‘inevitable’ after Friday practice in Monaco
Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

Red Bull continued to ace the third edition of the ground-effect era after a highly promising campaign in the 2024 season. However, despite scoring impressive race wins, the team has lost out on two races out of seven. The RB20 challenger has faced multiple issues with balance and grip around multiple circuits. As a result, Christian Horner expects some tough competition from rivals at the Monaco GP.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez couldn’t lead the practice sessions around the Monte Carlo circuit. In a shocking turn of events, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton led the FP1 session. Christian Horner wasn’t surprised by the rival teams finally catching up. The team principal pointed out that it was the third year of the ground-effect regulations. Hence, it was ‘inevitable’ to witness some convergence in competition.

We are in year three of these regulations, so it is inevitable that you are going to get convergence. Christian Horner said, as reported by racingnews365.com.

After enjoying a highly dominant lead for the previous two seasons, the Briton claimed it was ‘amazing’ to fend off for so long. However, as the rival teams gained more knowledge about Milton Keynes’ expertise, they started to capitalize on it. Horner deems this the reason for the ‘strong competition’ for Red Bull.

It is amazing that we've managed to stay ahead for so long, but as the cars converge in look and shape, and therefore lap-time, it is inevitable that there is going to be strong competition. Christian Horner added.

Christian Horner expects competition during the Qualifying session in Monaco

The Qualifying sessions in Monaco are usually action-packed with great competition for the pole position. Red Bull’s pace over one lap has been extremely solid as Verstappen has scored pole positions in all races so far. However, with the newfound pace of the rival teams, Horner expects some competition for the front-row start in Monte Carlo.

The Englishman pointed out that he ‘fully expects’ a competition for the qualifying session of the Monaco GP. The 50-year-old added that the circuit had a ‘unique layout’ and it all comes down to one lap during qualifying. Additionally, Red Bull had great pressure to keep improving their already promising performance to close the window on the rivals.

We fully expect [that to be the case] in Monaco, it is a unique layout on the calendar and of course, it all comes down to that one lap [in qualifying]. There is always a pressure to improve and nobody puts more pressure on ourselves than from within the team.  Christian Horner noted.

Max Verstappen has showcased his racing mettle time and again after scoring many unexpected race wins. Hence, winning around the Monacan circuit wouldn’t be the most unexpected situation for the Dutchman. The Austrian constructor will look into the issues and swiftly address them to help Verstappen regain his form for tomorrow’s qualifying session.
