Every year without fail, the Tifosi look at their beloved Ferrari, repeating that this will surely be their year. Over the past seasons, that statement has tended to be far from the truth. Could 2026 help break the unfortunate streak? Could the year of the horse breathe energy back into the suffocating team?
Ever since the end of Ferrari’s golden age, also known as the Schumacher era, the team has been on somewhat of a decline. Their last Drivers’ Championship came in 2007, thanks to the efforts of Kimi Räikkönen. They managed to snatch the Constructors’ Championship a year later, but it was the last trophy the team managed to win in the 21st century.
In their more recent history, Ferrari seemed to stand a chance of winning one, or perhaps both Championships in 2022. They began the season with the quickest car of all, and the advantage was put to good use by their number one driver, Charles Leclerc. Unfortunately, their performance went on the decline as the season unraveled. The Monegasque driver finished the season behind Max Verstappen and Ferrari had to settle for a spot behind his team, Red Bull Racing.
Few fans held out hope for the Red Bull-dominated 2023, but 2024 brought with it a new wave of belief in Ferrari’s abilities. Although the team didn’t enter the season on a perfectly steady footing, they only improved as it went on. Together, Leclerc and his teammate, Carlos Sainz, managed to win four out of the 24 races. Ferrari’s performance even allowed them to be a part of the fight for the Constructors’ Championship. They ultimately lost to the British McLaren, but the tense season’s final races gave the Tifosi something to look forward to.
2025 came with the unexpected signing of Lewis Hamilton. The addition of the seven-time world champion to Ferrari only fueled the hope for a season to remember. Although it did start with a sprint win for the Brit, it quickly became clear that the team would not be a part of any title fight. With that, all eyes shifted towards 2026, a year in which the new regulations were set to make anything possible.
Whenever people speculated about the pecking order of the 2026 season, Mercedes was always mentioned as the most probable frontrunner. If rumors were to be believed, their new engine, even if not yet fully developed, was far more powerful than their competitors’.
That same engine, however, had also become a source of controversy. The team explored a loophole related to the 16:1 compression ratio, with their engine reportedly exceeding it when running at temperature. Although Mercedes’ team principal, Toto Wolff, claims that the system is perfectly legal, the conversations surrounding it were the hot topic of the winter break.
Ferrari, on the other hand, was not rated too high. They were still generally predicted to remain a part of the top four, but few expected them to become a serious player in the 2026 title fight.
The attitudes shifted after the Bahrain pre-season testing. What many fans noticed was that the drivers in red, particularly Leclerc, consistently managed to achieve impressive times. At the end of the day, the Monegasque was quickest of all after qualifying simulation times. Of course, the testing times matter little and on their own would be a very weak indicator of the team’s possible performance. There are, however, other things that support the Tifosis’s “year of the horse” agenda.
While many teams struggled during the practice race starts, Ferrari excelled. The SF-26 could easily get up to speed and fly past the other contenders. The good starts could become a great advantage, as could the innovative system employed in the car’s rear wing. Once again, before the season begins, all praises should be taken with a pinch of salt. With the common practice of sandbagging, or hiding true performance, it is all but impossible to set a definitive pecking order.
The final and least objective clue towards Ferrari’s possible good performance is the attitude of its two drivers. Throughout the pre-season tests, they both seemed quite happy with the car, providing a stark contrast to some of their interviews from the tail end of the 2025 season. This is especially telling in the case of Leclerc, a man known for being a less-than-stellar actor. Will their smiles stay as wide as they are by the time the engines roar in Melbourne? Only time will tell.
So, could this truly be Ferrari’s year? Could 2026 go down in history as the end of their unfortunate drought? Nothing is certain, but things are, without a doubt, looking interesting in the team’s garage. It’s safe to say that the Tifosi’s fingers will be tightly crossed this upcoming weekend.
