'Did the Right Thing,’ Max Verstappen Applauds Red Bull’s Bold Qualifying Call at Canadian GP for P2 Finish

Red Bull only has a handful of races to achieve a turnaround in performance. Max Verstappen has pushed himself to the limit to emerge victorious amidst the team’s struggles. The team has brought in multiple upgrades that have granted some improvements in pace. Now, Verstappen has managed clinched a front-row start for the Canadian GP as he applauded the team’s efforts on Saturday.

Max Verstappen has a great history when it comes to the Canadian GP. The Dutchman is on a hot winning streak in Montreal, as he has won his past three outings on this track. Now, Verstappen achieves a front-row start for the main event on Sunday following Red Bull’s impressive call on tire strategy. Following this, the reigning world champion couldn’t hold back from applauding this exceptional feat strategic call from the team that helped him achieve this feat.

Max Verstappen proudly pointed out that he felt good within the car all weekend in terms of performance. This is apparent from Verstappen’s impressive lap times even during the practice sessions leading up to Qualifying. As such, the 27-year-old asserted that he was very happy with the team’s performance in qualifying despite missing out on the pole position to George Russell.

I felt good all weekend, the car was actually in a good window. Overall, I’m very happy with Qualifying.

Max Verstappen said in a post-session interview

Verstappen reckoned that the tough choice to master at the Canadian circuit was the tire strategy. The ground-effect era cars are notoriously known for eating up the tires and messing up the tire management strategies of the teams. Hence, the Dutchman showcased his delight as Red Bull did the right thing by choosing the medium tires and helping him maximize on results.

The tough choice was the tires, and I think we did the right thing.

Max Verstappen not completely satisfied with P2 start for Canadian GP

Max Verstappen is one of the fiercest competitors in Formula 1 over the past couple of years. The Dutchman considers finishing P1 and winning as the only acceptable result, as anything below is simply a loss. Hence, starting in the front row but not the first spot meant that Verstappen isn’t completely satisfied with the result, as he voices his disappointment.

Verstappen clearly stated that he would always pick starting in P1 over any other spot. However, he reckoned that a P2 start was still decent as he would have a great shot at the lead heading into Turn 1. As such, the Dutchman concluded by claiming that he was extremely satisfied with what Red Bull achieved in terms of starting on the front row.

I would always pick P1, but [P2] is fine, I’m already very happy with what we achieved to be on th efront row.

Max Verstappen noted

Despite facing massive performance struggles, Max Verstappen has refused to give up on contending for the drivers’ title this season. The 27-year-old is just 49 points adrift of the championship leader, Oscar Piastri, as he aims to bridge this gap. The Canadian GP is a great shot for Verstappen to close in on the gap as he sets his eyes on the prize at the main event.
