Ex-F1 Driver Labels Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Situation ‘Critical’ Amid Persistent Struggles

Lewis Hamilton joined Scuderia Ferrari this year with high ambitions. After a couple of woeful stints with Mercedes, the seven-time world champion hoped to rediscover his mojo at Maranello. Unfortunately, things have been nowhere close to Hamilton’s expectations, with a lack of on-track results. Now, former F1 driver Karun Chandhok has voiced concerns over the Briton’s situation.

Since joining Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton has failed to clinch a single podium finish or a pole position. The only positive result so far has been the 40-year-old’s shock sprint victory at the Chinese GP. Moreover, Hamilton is struggling to match the pace of his teammate Charles Leclerc. So much so, that Nico Rosberg wants Leclerc to exploit the Briton’s weak performances.

Karun Chandhok asserted that the situation had become critical for Hamilton and Ferrari. The Indian driver was alarmed to see the F1 star still struggling to get comfortable with the car even after one-third of the season was over. Chandhok highlighted that Hamilton just was not happy with the car, which further led to more inconsistencies on-track.

It’s starting to get a bit critical. We’re coming into the second third of the season now and he’s not finding the rhythm. He’s not finding consistency where week in, week out, he’s in a happy place in the car.

Karun Chandhok told Sky F1

The former Red Bull driver pointed out that there is a bit of a rollercoaster over Hamilton’s pace. At the Emilia Romagna GP, the Briton managed to turn things around on Sunday after struggling during Qualification. On the other hand, Lewis Hamilton was nowhere close to the front runners at the Monaco GP this season.

In Imola, he was woeful in qualifying, then suddenly the car’s brilliant in the race. In Monaco, he wasn’t quite there. He was a chunk behind Charles throughout.

Ferrari ‘concerned’ over Lewis Hamilton’s struggles

Ferrari signed Lewis Hamilton with great fanfare last year. The Italian team hoped that the F1 star would bring glory back to the Maranello in what was the most iconic driver-team pairing in recent history. However, Hamilton’s recent performances have not made things easy.

Karun Chandhok reckoned that the Briton’s side of the garage at Ferrari must be having serious concerns. He reckoned that the team must try and find out any fundamental issue with the car that has led to Hamilton’s struggles. This would be necessary if the team wants to help better suit the machinery for the 40-year-old, particularly in terms of car set-up.

If I was on the Lewis side of the garage, I would be concerned. We are nearly at halfway through the year now, we need to start understanding whether this a fundamental issue, that we need to change the direction of the set-up of the car.

Karun Chandhok explained

It is not as if Lewis Hamilton has lost all his pace. The Briton did show that he remains capable of winning races after his Sprint triumph in China. Unfortunately, this is not enough. The 40-year-old has been on the back foot since the start of the season with no concrete signs of improvement.

It is time for the seven-time world champion to find a solution to his struggles. Lewis Hamilton must continue to work with his crew to better understand the underlying issues with the car and his driving style. However, it seems that any fix will take some time to translate to on-track results.
