Mercedes driver George Russell has become one of the biggest stars in Formula 1 over the last few years.
Russell made his F1 debut in 2019 with Williams, Mercedes’ engine customers. He spent three years with the team in total before joining the Silver Arrows as Lewis Hamilton’s teammate.
Russell beat Hamilton, the most successful driver in F1 history, in both the 2022 and 2024 championship standings. When Hamilton left to join Ferrari, he became Toto Wolff’s de facto team leader.
His F1 statline now includes five Grand Prix victories, seven pole positions and 24 podium finishes. He enters the 2026 season as one of the favourites for the world championship.
Russell signed a lucrative contract extension at Mercedes last autumn. The Times report that he’s now earning £30m per year.
Like many F1 drivers, Russell resides in Monaco, as he revealed to Auto Motor und Sport, his ‘everyday car’ is a Mercedes AMG One, worth around £2.2m.
While many millionaires may prefer to keep a car that valuable in ‘bubble wrap’, Russell wants to enjoy it. He has no concerns about it losing value.
“I drive it a lot,” he said. “I’ve already put a few hundred kilometres on the clock. To be honest, I simply use it as my everyday car when I’m in Monaco.
“I always think: Why not! A car like this shouldn’t be sitting in a museum wrapped in bubble wrap. I want to enjoy it. It makes me happy.
“I’m not worried about that. Past experience has shown that such limited-edition cars tend to hold their value relatively well for the first five years. And then prices usually rise rapidly.”
The AMG One holds the record for a road-legal vehicle on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. It completed the 20.8-km layout in six minutes and 29 seconds, making it the first car to ever lap under the 6:30 mark.
That’s perhaps no surprise given that it features a 1.6-litre turbo/hybrid engine from a Mercedes F1 car.
The limited-edition hypercar produces over 1,000 horsepower and can reach 60mph in less than three seconds.
The car can only travel 11 miles on a full battery, though, so Russell will have to use both elements of the hybrid engine.
