Fernando Alonso has uncovered a fascinating chapter from his career, shedding light on a missed opportunity with Red Bull. These revelations take us back to a time when Alonso, celebrated for his accomplishments with Renault, was on the cusp of joining a now-dominant team that was then seen as an outsider in the motorsport world.
This unexpected confession adds another layer to the story of a driver whose career has been marked by remarkable highs. Alonso, who entered the Formula One scene with Minardi in 2001, quickly made his mark, securing his first victory and later winning back-to-back championships in 2005 and 2006 with Renault. Despite his achievements, the trajectory of his career remained unpredictable.
After his initial success, Alonso's career saw him navigate multiple teams. Following his stint with Renault, he joined McLaren in 2007, a move marred by internal issues, prompting a return to Renault. His tenure with Ferrari from 2010 to 2014 was competitive, though he narrowly missed out on clinching additional titles. His later move to McLaren in 2015 was fraught with difficulties due to engine supplier issues. In 2018, he temporarily stepped away from the sport, only to return with Alpine in 2021, before ultimately joining Aston Martin.
Recently, Alonso revealed how close he came to joining Red Bull, a prospect that was explored in two meetings with team figures Adrian Newey and Christian Horner.
"I met Adrian [Newey] and Christian [Horner] in Heathrow Airport for a meeting. And then 2008 was the closest. I remember perfectly, we were in a car park at Spa Airport, the little airport on top of the hill," Alonso recounted. "We were in that car park, sitting in the back seats, both of us at night, talking about the possibility. I was very close to Ferrari. If it was not [happening] in 2009, [it] would be for sure in 2010. We went into that road and they took Sebastian [who] was in BMW at that time, doing some Fridays and some driving in BMW."
These talks occurred during a period when Red Bull, while starting to make a name for itself, was still largely seen as an unconventional choice in Formula One. Alonso thought about the uncertain future of joining a team like Red Bull at that time, explaining, "It's easy to say now but back in 2008, Red Bull had I think one podium with David [Coulthard] in Monaco, and Red Bull was an energy drink company. Great team, great members in the team, but I think to predict that they will win seven or eight championships in the next decade, it was not totally guaranteed."
He continued, noting how Lewis Hamilton's switch from McLaren to Mercedes initially raised eyebrows, yet it led to a string of championships.
"When Lewis changed from McLaren to Mercedes, that first year in 2013 [there were] a lot of critics, 'why [have] you changed McLaren for a Mercedes that was only achieving one or two podiums until then?' And now he's a seven-time world champion. Now the same with Ferrari. You don't know what Lewis will achieve next year. If Ferrari does well and wins a championship, it's a great move," Alonso observed.
As of now, Alonso remains a strong driver in Formula One, having committed to Aston Martin until at least 2026.

Luka Doncic scored 37 points with 10 assists and LeBron James added 11 points in 30 minutes of his season debut as the Los Angeles Lakers rallied for a 140-125 victory over the visiting Utah Jazz on Tuesday. Austin Reaves scored 26 points, Deandre Ayton added 20 points with 14 rebounds. Jake LaRavia had 16 points as Los Angeles won its third consecutive game. However, the game was historic for James and the NBA After missing the first 14 games of the season because of sciatica on his right side, James took the court to become the first player in NBA history to play in 23 consecutive seasons. Keyonte George scored 33 points and Lauri Markkanen added 31 for the Jazz, who lost for the fifth time in their past seven games. Svi Mykhailiuk and Ace Bailey each scored 13 points and Jusuf Nurkic added 10 points with 10 rebounds in Utah's only road contest in a stretch of seven games. The Lakers didn't take their first lead until going up 89-88 on a Doncic layup with 3:36 remaining in the third quarter. The basket was part of an 8-0 run that gave Los Angeles a 91-88 advantage. The Lakers dominated from there. They led 104-93 through three quarters after trailing by as many as seven points earlier in the period. Doncic scored 17 points in the third quarter alone when Los Angeles had a 37-22 scoring advantage. It was more of the same in the fourth quarter as the Lakers had a 36-32 advantage and finished with a season high in points. The Jazz led the entire first half, taking an 11-2 lead 3:19 into the game and going up 16-6 five minutes into the opening quarter. James had a turnover in the opening minute and missed his only shot of the first quarter as Utah took a 36-27 lead. Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Kenny Clark found the perfect word to describe the team's defensive tackles during the win over the Las Vegas Raiders: Nasty. It's easy to see why. Clark, Quinnen Williams, and Osa Odighizuwa combined for three sacks and nine quarterback hits. They made plays against the run, too, with three combined tackles for loss and a lot more plays invisible in the eyes of the stat sheet but important nevertheless. Odighizuwa and Williams led the NFL in PFF defensive grades for all defensive tackles for Week 11. It wasn't only nasty, it was scary. And believe it or not, that position group for the Cowboys just got better on Tuesday. The team announced its activated Perrion Winfrey from its Injured Reserve. Winfrey was a preseason standout not expected to make the 53-man roster when he was signed. However, his strong play everywhere on the defensive line earned him a spot on the team, though an injury delayed his season debut until now. In Week 12, he is set to officially join one of the best defensive tackle rooms in the NFL. The Cowboys waived LB Damone Clark to open up a roster spot. Winfrey's activation poses first-world problem for the Cowboys With Winfrey's activation, the Cowboys have six defensive tackles on the 53-man roster, which is considered on the higher side in the NFL. On a 48-man gameday roster, it's difficult to use six spots on defensive tackles. For reference, Dallas has listed at least one defensive tackle as an inactive player every week this season—most times as a healthy scratch. Before it was either Jay Toia or Mazi Smith. Now, the Cowboys might be forced to place Toia—a seventh-round rookie—on the inactives list but he's the only true nose tackle on the team. Even on Monday, he logged 13 defensive snaps. The alternative could be to place Winfrey in the inactives while the room remains healthy. Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has a tough decision to make. But anytime you're forced to choose because of having too many good players in one position, it's a first-world problem to have. window.addEventListener('message', function (event) {if (event.data.totalpoll event.data.totalpoll.action === 'resizeHeight') {document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-375').height = event.data.totalpoll.value;}}, false);document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-375').contentWindow.postMessage({totalpoll: {action: 'requestHeight'}}, '*'); This story was originally reported by A to Z Sports on Nov 18, 2025, where it first appeared in the NFL section. The Washington Commanders are on a bye week after losing their sixth-straight game to the Miami Dolphins in Madrid, Spain, and now have time to regroup and evaluate the team. There weren't a lot of positives to take away from the loss, except for the Commanders finally moving on from kicker Matt Gay and a couple of young players standing out. The roster needs to be reconstructed once again this offseason, and seeing what key younger players they have on the roster is a huge goal for the rest of the season. Luckily, three young players showed they can be key contributors next season for the Commanders against the Dolphins. OT Josh Conerly Jr. Rookie right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. has had a roller coaster of a season after a rough start, but he's really started to find his groove over the last few weeks. Conerly Jr. allowed four sacks and 11 pressures in his first two games of his rookie season, and had some hiccups along the way, but the last two weeks have shown his potential. Conerly Jr. held Detroit Lions pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson in check with zero sacks and only one pressure, and followed it up with another impressive showing against the Dolphins. The right tackle once again didn't allow a single sack and only two pressures. His upside has been trending up, and that's something the Commanders needed to see. LB Jordan Magee The defense has been the main storyline of the roster, and the downfall led to Dan Quinn taking over as defensive coordinator. This was the first game with Quinn as the new defensive coordinator, and we saw a much-improved defense, including second-year linebacker Jordan Magee. Stats-wise, Magee had five tackles and didn't miss a single one, and also allowed just 22 yards in coverage on three catches, which is much better than what we've seen from the linebacker group this season. Magee showed that he can fly around and play freely, while being smart enough to read and react and not overshoot on plays, especially on passes coming from the backfield. Being one of the starting linebackers next year would be huge for the Commanders' defense, and one less roster spot to worry about. RB Chris Rodriguez Jr. The Commanders' running back room has been a rotation of Bill Croskey Merritt, Chris Rodriguez Jr, and Jeremy McNichols, who all have their own roles. The 25-year-old running back started the season inactive, but got the chance to prove himself again after Austin Ekeler went down. He's made the most of his opportunities. Over the last three weeks, however, Rodriguez Jr. has taken over as the main running back, and it doesn't look like he will give it up anytime soon. He had 12 attempts for 65 yards and a touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks, and found the endzone again the next week against the Lions. Rodriguez Jr. carried that momentum to Madrid, Spain, and had a season-high 79 yards on the ground, and tied his Week 1 carry count with 16 attempts. The Commanders still need a legit RB1 in free agency or the draft, but Rodriguez has shown that he can run hard and open up the running game as well. Taylor Swift's emotional handwritten letter to Liam Payne is expected to draw significant attention when it goes up for auction next month. The note, sent in December 2017, is projected to sell for as much as $13,000 due to its deeply personal and historic nature. Swift wrote the message shortly before Payne took the stage at the Jingle Bell Ball in London, at a time when he was gaining traction as a solo artist after One Direction began its hiatus. According to the auctioneers, interest has already grown ahead of bidding. Taylor wrote: "Liam, long time no see! I'm so excited for you. You're crushing it out there. I'm obsessed with Bedroom Floor. It's so cool to see you from afar, I'm always cheering you on. Good luck tonight!" The Mirror reports that the letter showed up in an envelope labeled only "Liam," covered in stars. The envelope was wax-sealed with a "T," and on the back appeared "Nashville, Tennessee." Payne reportedly gave the letter to a friend shortly after receiving it. The sale of the note comes just over a year after Payne's death in October 2024. The singer died at age 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. According to the People, an autopsy later revealed polytrauma along with traces of alcohol, cocaine, and prescription antidepressants in his system. His sister, Ruth Gibbins, described ongoing grief in the months since his death. She said: "My brain is locked on your last minutes on this earth, the unaccounted minutes, the minutes I will never have the answers to, the minutes that changed everything." She also posted on Instagram : "I underestimated grief, woah, did I underestimate it. I am paralysed by it daily. I thought I had felt it before but I know the losses before you were just intense sadness, you are the loss of my life, the one person who l will miss at every single occasion in my life." Omega Auctions is expected to see much interest from collectors once it begins accepting bids for the item, since the letter is a rare personal exchange between two major pop figures. According to the source, the timing has added an emotional weight to the sale, aligning as it does with the anniversary of Payne's death.
