Fernando Alonso has never blended racing legacy with real-life moments quite like this. During the winter break, the Aston Martin driver was seen driving through Monaco in an ultra-rare Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, one of the most exclusive road-legal supercars in existence.

The sighting immediately drew attention across the F1 world, not just because of the car’s staggering value and history, but because it comes at a pivotal personal moment for Alonso. The 43-year-old is preparing to become a father, with longtime partner Melissa Jimenez expecting their first child together.

The combination of motorsport heritage and personal milestone made the moment resonate far beyond a simple luxury car sighting.

Why the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Is So special

The Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR is not just rare, it is borderline mythical in automotive circles. Built by Mercedes-AMG in the late 1990s, the car was originally developed to dominate the 1997 FIA GT Championship before also competing at the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Under the hood sits a naturally aspirated V12 producing 622 horsepower and 539 lb-ft of torque. The numbers are still eye-opening today: 0-62 mph in just 3.8 seconds and a top speed of nearly 200 mph.

Only 28 road-legal versions were ever produced, with just 20 coupes made available globally. Alonso’s example places him in one of the most exclusive automotive clubs in the world, a fitting match for a driver whose career has spanned multiple eras of F1.

A Veteran Still Delivering on Track

While the Monaco sighting highlighted Alonso’s off -track life, his on-track form in 2025 proved he remains a formidable presence.

Alonso finished the season 10th in the drivers’ standings with 56 points, comfortably outperforming Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll, who ended the year with 33 points in 16th.

Despite Aston Martin’s inconsistent campaign, Alonso continued to extract minimum performance, reinforcing his reputation as one of the grid’s sharpest competitors well into his forties.
