The Ferrari team principal is focused on restoring Leclerc’s belief in the Scuderia as uncertainty builds around the Monegasque’s long-term commitment.
Charles Leclerc may hold the longest contract on the 2026 Formula 1 grid, with his current deal running through to 2029, but his position at Ferrari is far from secure. Despite signing that long-term extension in early 2024, the 28-year-old has grown increasingly frustrated with the team’s lack of competitiveness since then.
Leclerc endured another winless season in 2025 — the fourth of his Ferrari career — and has now framed the upcoming 2026 campaign, which introduces sweeping new regulations, as a decisive moment for both himself and the team. The way Ferrari adapt to the new rules will play a critical role in determining whether he remains in red.
Reports suggest Leclerc negotiated a performance-related release clause that could allow him to exit Ferrari in 2026 if the team fails to provide him with a car capable of fighting at the front. With concerns growing inside Maranello that he could seek a move elsewhere, team principal Fred Vasseur has made restoring Leclerc’s confidence his primary mission.
Vasseur is said to be determined to convince the eight-time Grand Prix winner that Ferrari are on the right path, hoping to secure a fresh long-term commitment rather than risk losing him with years remaining on his existing contract. Ensuring that Leclerc fully believes in Ferrari’s direction under the 2026 regulations has become central to Vasseur’s leadership agenda.
While Leclerc is prepared to give Ferrari the opportunity to prove themselves under the new regulatory era, his patience is not unlimited. He has instructed his management not to engage with rival teams for now, despite strong interest from across the paddock, but that stance could change if Ferrari fail to deliver.
Several top teams are monitoring the situation closely. McLaren are understood to be keen should Oscar Piastri depart at the end of 2026, while Aston Martin — strengthened by Adrian Newey’s arrival as team principal — could also emerge as a major contender, especially with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll both out of contract. Red Bull would likewise be expected to make an approach if Max Verstappen were to activate his own release options.
For Ferrari, the message is clear: 2026 may define not just their competitiveness, but their future with one of the sport’s most valuable drivers.
