George Russell and Mercedes are yet to release a contract extension, as rumors of Max Verstappen to Brackley have died down. Initially, it was believed that Russell’s extension delay was due to the German carmaker’s intense interest in acquiring the reigning world champion. However, Verstappen cleared the air and is going to continue his career at Red Bull. Still, the Briton is without a contract for the 2026 season onwards in Formula 1.

The 2025 season is halfway over, with just ten more races left in the year. George Russell has performed consistently this year, but is still far away from fighting for the title lead. The Briton is optimistic about his chances to succeed in Formula 1 despite not fighting for a title since the beginning of his career. Regardless of the untoward delay in contractual talks, Russell is least concerned about it at the moment.

George Russell revealed that he and Mercedes were in positive talks at the moment. Russell recalled his past comments about no big news coming over the summer break, as that is exactly what happened. Max Verstappen confirmed his stay at Milton Keynes and that he wasn’t making a bombshell move to Brackley. The Briton also noted that both parties wanted to enjoy the summer break and relax, as they did not discuss the former’s contract with the team over the break.

We’re in positive talks at the moment. And yeah, as I said, nothing was going to happen during the summer break, because from both of our sides, there was no reason for it to happen because we wanted to, ultimately, enjoy the short time we had off.

George Russell said, as reported by RacingNews365

Despite the delay in contract confirmation for George Russell, he reiterated that things were moving in the right direction regarding his continuation. As such, Russell hoped for the deal to be finalized in due time and be revealed to the public. The 27-year-old insisted that he had no time pressure on him as the 2025 season was still pending halfway.

But things are moving in the right direction, so yeah, hopefully in due course, but as I said before the break, we need to make sure it’s right and there isn’t any time pressure from my side.

George Russell reassures his goals with Mercedes

George Russell is yet to contend for a driver’s title, let alone win a title in his career. Despite Mercedes’ seemingly difficult days in recent years, Russell insisted that he wasn’t concerned with the length of the contract extension provided to him. Rather, he focused on performance and always improving in the right direction.

Speaking on his goal at Mercedes, George Russell clarified that he was in it to win with the team. The 27-year-old emphasized that the upcoming regulations of the 2026 season would be vital for every team, as anyone can dominate under the new regulations. Regardless of the contract extension delays, the Briton reassured that his focus was on the next year and emerging as a winning force by then.

I don’t really mind to be honest, because I think it just always needs to be down to performance. So there’s benefits in both [contract lengths]. My goal is to win with Mercedes, as clear as that, and I think next year is such a vital year for every team, every sort of driver, team, partnership. But from my side, next year is a priority.

George Russell noted

Mercedes’ performance in the 2025 season has been decent so far, but far from satisfactory. Russell has won one race at the Canadian GP and has maintained consistent results. However, the Briton must push as hard as possible if he wants a realistic shot at the driver’s title. For now, the 27-year-old will aim to improve his position in the pecking order this year and hopes to emerge victorious in the coming years.
