What do you get when you put all 20 F1 drivers in a single WhatsApp group? According to George Russell, a lot more chaos than you’d expect.
In a recent interview, the Mercedes driver pulled back the curtain on F1’s famously secretive Grand Prix Drivers’ Association(GPDA) group chat and confirmed that its not all about track limits and tire strategy.
“Well, it’s not just one or the other,” Russell said, laughing. “It’s probably a mixture of both. When a conversation starts, the messages just fly back and forth.”
The GPDA chat includes all 20 current drivers, along with Alex Wurz (GPDA Chairman and former F1 driver) and Anastasia Fowle (legal advisor), making it one of the most exclusive digital hangouts in sports. And while the group plays a key role in shaping discussion on driver safety and regulations, it’s far from dull.
“We all have a good friendship with each other, although some people are better and others are worse,” Russell explained. “But it’s a pretty unique chat group: imagine the 15 or 20 best soccer players in the world had a group chat — you probably wouldn’t see [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo sending each other memes… So yeah, that’s something special.”
Russell didn’t name names when it came to the most active texters or meme-lords in the group, but the idea of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris reacting to stickers mid-race weekend is already lighting up fan imagination.

For years, fans have speculated about the vibe inside this digital drivers’ room—and Russell’s comments finally confirm what many hoped: it's serious when needed, but just as often pure F1 banter.
In a sport driven by data, precision, and public image, it turns out even the fastest men on Earth need a place to laugh, vent, and spam the occasional meme.
