Oscar Piastri has finally lost his long-held title lead to Lando Norris following the latter’s stellar win in Mexico. Piastri had started the season off in great form and achieved some consecutive race wins to lead the title. However, in the final stages of the year, the Aussie seems unable to return to his old form. As such, ex-F1 team boss Guenther Steiner accuses McLaren of not favoring the 24-year-old over Norris.
Oscar Piastri had declared that he would race his teammate hard this year to fight for the title win. Moreover, McLaren refused to interfere between the two drivers with papaya rules. However, the team backtracked on their words and did the very same after swapping drivers at the Italian GP.
Now, Guenther Steiner fired some shots at the Woking-based constructor for unfairly favoring one driver over the other. Guenther Steiner reckoned that Oscar Piastri’s dominant pace since the beginning of the year was clearly not enough to hail him as the clear championship winner.
The Italian insisted that Piastri was struggling big time now, and he was unaware of the reasons behind it. He said with surety that the Aussie was not getting support from the team to win the championship like he should have, and that was affecting his title chances.
Keeping in mind the massive struggles, Oscar Piastri lost his mojo on track and couldn’t perform like he was doing at the beginning of the season. Moreover, the Aussie was having self-doubts, which further caused him problems in performing at the pinnacle of his career.
I mean it wasn’t good enough to be world champion, no? He’s struggling now and I don’t know what exactly is happening but one of the things I could conclude out of it is that, Oscar being… he doesn’t get support from the team to win the championship. You lose a little bit your mojo. You have doubts and you don’t perform – as you called the dice man – you don’t perform anymore without, you know…
Guenther Steiner said on the Red Flags podcast.
Oscar Piastri started to struggle on track, and this caused him to get desperate to come out of the performance slump. This ultimately caused his performances to degrade substantially and caused him problems in maintaining his championship lead. Because of these issues, Guenther Steiner noted that the 24-year-old lost confidence in himself and lost the lead at the end.
Guenther Steiner recalled Oscar Piastri’s disappointing outing in Mexico and how his woes started early on after a poor qualifying outing. The Italian insisted that Piastri lost confidence in himself and was left out on the track on his own. He already did not have a chance to score well after a disappointing starting position, and hence finally lost the race lead to Norris in the end.
In the end, I think he lost a little bit of confidence and therefore qualifying, you’re out there on your own. It’s just difficult. Didn’t have a good lap. You start in Mexico where he started. You haven’t got a chance, you know?
Guenther Steiner added.
The 2025 season is still not over, as there are four more races where Oscar Piastri can showcase his racing talent and emerge victorious in the title battle. Lando Norris is definitely not going to make life any easier for the Aussie and drag the battle until the very last race. Now, it will be interesting to witness which driver manages to come out on top and prove their racing prowess.
