Former England captain Michael Vaughan and Hawk-Eye creator Paul Hawkins engaged in a heated debate regarding the use of the Decision Review System (DRS) decision after the technology’s use during the ongoing Test series between India and England. The controversy started after Joe Root‘s LBW dismissal after India took a DRS in the fourth Test.

Vaughan wants the use of microphones and cameras inside the room where the umpires make the decisions. He thinks a bit more transparency will put the “noise to bed.” Vaughan also wants the International Cricket Council to get rid of the controversial Umpire’s Call.

But Hawk-Eye creator Hawkins dismissed Vaughan’s remarks, calling his commentary “uneducated“. He wants the ex-English skipper to prepare more for his role as a journalist so that he can produce factually correct reports.

The commentary, I think, is a little bit uneducated. It is unfortunate for Vaughan, because, obviously, a fantastic player, really enjoyed watching him play, and a great commentator, very entertaining. But I think it’s a responsibility to the game, in terms of journalism. Hawkins said on The Analytics Podcast
Perhaps a little bit more preparation in terms of his role as a journalist may help him explain what’s happening to the huge fan base of cricket so that what he writes is factually correct. In the same way, as Hawk-Eye has an obligation to be factually correct, perhaps journalists do too. He added

Michael Vaughan is very active on X (formerly Twitter). In spite of the remark from Paul Hawkins, Vaughan simply reiterated his call for DRS transparency. He wrote the fans should see everything that’s happening inside the DRS room.

Hawkins developed the Hawk-Eye system in the United Kingdom and the technology was first used in 2000 in cricket matches.

Meanwhile, India won the Test series 3-1 after their fourth Test victory. The last Test will be played from March 7.
