How Many F1 Teams Are There?

For the first time in a decade, the Formula One team structure will change for the 2026 season.

In the last 10 years, 10 teams took part in the F1 season. This year will see 11 as Cadillac joined the F1 fold, giving the racing organization its first new addition since Haas joined in 2016. Cadillac previously participated in F1 for two races - in 1952 and in 1953.

With Cadillac now on board, let’s examine the teams in 2026.

Ferrari

When most people think F1, they think Ferrari. The team has been in the racing organization since F1’s inception in 1950 as company founder Enzo Ferrari built the brand on motorsports competition. No team has competed in more grand prix or won as many, either. The Ferrari team has won the championship F1 a record 15 times, but not since 2007.

McLaren

The second-longest team tenure in F1 belongs to McLaren, which has run in the series since 1966. They ran for the first time in the Monaco Grand Prix and continue through, now, their 60th year.

Williams

Williams first entered F1 in 1975 and became a regular in the series in 1977. The team was most dominant in the 1990s, winning five World Constructors Championships in the decade. They’ve largely been a mid-pack or lower-tier team in the 21st century, though new ownership in 2020 saw Williams finish fifth, their best standing since 2017.

Red Bull

The pride of Austrian sports, Red Bull has established itself in racing (the base is in England), ice hockey and soccer with high-achieving teams in all sports. Red Bull joined the F1 fray in 2005 and won four straight World Constructors Championships from 2010-13 and two straight in 2022-23 before being knocked off the pedestal by McLaren the last two seasons.

Alpine

Technically, the organization has been racing in F1 since 1981 when it was called Toleman. But this iteration of Alpine hit its current rebrand in 2021. They finished 10th in the 10-team season last year, with drivers finishing in the top 10 in just four races.

Mercedes

Mercedes has been in F1 off and on since the 1950s, but only officially joined the constructors’ championship for the first time ahead of the 2010 season. From 2014 to 2021, Mercedes won the constructors’ championship and they’ve never finished worse than fifth in the modern era.

Aston Martin

The recognized brand on the roadways has only been participating in modern F1 since 2021, though they raced two seasons in 1959 and 1960 before that. So far, the team has yet to finish higher than fifth and are coming off a seventh-place finish.

Haas

Long-established in North America in NASCAR, Haas joined F1 in 2016. They haven’t quite as much success outside of stock-car racing, though, finishing no better than eighth in eight of the 10 years they’ve run in the circuit.

  • 2026 drivers: Esteban Ocon, Oliver Bearman

Audi

Audi is making its F1 debut as a team in the constructors championship in 2026. Sort of. The company purchased Sauber, which has been in F1 since the early 1990s, and will run with a veteran and youngster at the helm this season.

  • 2026 drivers: Nico Hulkenberg, Gabriel Bortoleto

Racing Bulls

To newcomers, it may be helpful to think of Racing Bulls as Red Bull’s B-team. They made their debut in 2024, finishing eighth before bumping up to sixth last year.

  • 2026 drivers: Liam Lawson, Arvid Lindblad

Cadillac

Cadillac, with the backing of General Motors, received approval to join F1 in March 2025 in preparation for its debut this year. Veterans Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez should help the team avoid an 11th-place finish.
