Lewis Hamilton claims Mercedes has ‘lot of work to do’ to get to the end of the Monaco GP
John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Mercedes had a strong Friday at the Monaco GP. Lewis Hamilton topped the time charts for FP1, with George Russell following the seven-time world champion in third place.. Hamilton described the drive during practice to be enjoyable.

The seven time world champion expressed his joy regarding the performance put forth by the car. The street track of Monaco deems qualifying to be an essential part of the race weekend due overtaking being borderline impossible. Lewis Hamilton claimed the team to be working in the right direction for qualifying.

I think the second session… I don’t know whether we improved or not. Definitely the long runs we still have a lot of work to do overnight to try and make sure that we can make it to the end of the race. Lewis Hamilton said

Mercedes went on to cross the finish line at P2 and P10 for Hamilton and Russell respectively in the second session. The drastic variation in the results has caused the seven time world champion to be apprehensive of the car’s performance in the long run. He claimed the need for further modifications on the car for the team to finish the race on a high note.

Toto Wolff claims Mercedes needs to ‘compromise’ Qualifying for race pace

Following the turn of events at the Monaco GP practice, Toto Wolff, deemed the W15’s long run pace to be lacking. However, Wolff claimed the car to be performing at a good pace regarding a single lap. This turmoil has forced the Brackley-based team to compromise on either qualifying or the race.

The Austrian held emphasis on being able to finish the race at Monaco. Pushing at qualifying could take a toll on the tires thus affecting the drivability during the race. Wolff mentioned about the depreciating performance of the front tires ahead of Lap 6 during the practice sessions.

On a single lap, it was good, the car is good. On a long run, it was less so. I think after lap six, seven we really lost the front. And then, if you can’t get the car into the corner any more, then the Sunday could be pretty grim. So we need to find a compromise. Toto Wolff stated

While Qualifying may be the one to be compromised, the Brackley-based team is determined to put forth a competitive car for the race. The team looks forward to working overnight to bring about desired modifications and to make the car more drivable on Sunday. Toto Wolff is confident with the direction the team is headed towards this weekend.
