The Mercedes F1 team has not got off to the kind of start they were hoping for ahead of the ongoing 2024 season. After three rounds, the outfit is fourth in the standings, and amidst all this, Lewis Hamilton has deemed the situation with the W15 as extremely ‘complex.’

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were hoping to hit the ground running from the very first event this year. However, things have not panned out as per plan, and the former, specifically, has struggled a lot in getting to grips with the W15.

In Australia, the Brackley-based outfit had a double DNF and during the ongoing Japanese GP weekend, Hamilton has talked about the state of things with the W15.

When we started with this generation of car, we started with five bricks, good weight, we had to knock it down and try again, knock it down, try it again and take off that performance basically. And we’ve made all these changes, tried everything, sometimes lost our way, then found it and then lost again. I think it’s just very complex. Lewis Hamilton said in an interview with SkyF1

The 39-year-old has made it known that under the current set of regulations, his team has just not been able to create a solid foundation for its cars. He views this as one of the main reasons why the team is struggling with its W15 like it has with its recent cars.

Lewis Hamilton feels there is ‘performance’ in the W15

While Hamilton has made it known that the situation at Mercedes is complex with its cars, he has also taken the time to admit that there is untapped potential in the W15. He genuinely feels the 2024 car has additional performance in it.

The Brit hopes to extract the same from the ongoing race weekend onward.

Obviously, the first couple of races, there’s been small showings of the car feeling great and we have pace for a moment, and then it kind of disappears. So there’s definitely performance there, we just need to work on making this car more consistent and easier to drive. Lewis Hamilton said in the same interview

As mentioned earlier, the ongoing campaign is three rounds down, and there is a long way to go until the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi. Keeping this in view, the ongoing Japanese GP weekend could act as the perfect launching pad that kicks the 2024 campaign into gear for the Mercedes outfit. Hamilton and Russell have ended the recently concluded FP1 session in fourth and fifth place at the Suzuka International Racing Circuit.
