Lewis Hamilton has sent a heartfelt message to the Jamaican bobsleigh team on social media.
The Jamaicans rose to fame at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, despite finishing outside the medal places.
From a country where it never snows, their participation was a feel-good story of hard work paying off.
They also inspired the iconic film, Cool Runnings, released in 1993.
Hamilton’s message came as the Jamaicans are competing at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games this month.
Hamilton revealed that the Jamaican bobsleigh team inspired him when he was growing up.
Born in 1985, Hamilton is too young to remember the 1988 Winter Olympics, but he would have been eight years old when Cool Runnings was released.
The Ferrari driver reminisced about taking inspiration from the Jamaicans decades ago and urged fans to take them seriously this year.
“Massive shoutout to the Jamaican bobsleigh team,” Hamilton posted on his Instagram story.
“Ever since I was a kid, they inspired me. I knew exactly what it felt like to be the odd one who wasn’t taken seriously.
“They’ve come so far. It’s definitely time people understand this team means business.”
Jamaican bobsleigher Tyquendo Tracey believes that Lewis Hamilton would actually be good at the sport.
The seven-time Formula 1 world champion could transfer some of his skills from the track onto the ice.
“I think he (Hamilton) would do well,” F1 enthusiast Tracey told Reuters.
“When you see people like Lewis Hamilton going around curves [at] 200-250 miles an hour, he’s going to have the eye for it to be able to manoeuvre a sled… so, personally, I think he would do very well.”
