Lewis Hamilton’s Former Race Engineer Reflects on Their Split in Netflix’s F1 Documentary

Netflix’s new F1 documentary The Seat may center on Mercedes’ rising star Kimi Antonelli but it’s a quiet, emotional moment from another key figure that’s striking a chord with longtime fans.

Peter Bonnington—known to F1 world as ‘Bono’—has served as Lewis Hamilton’s race engineer for over a decade, guiding him though six of his seven world championships with the Silver Arrows. In the documentary, he reflects on their enduring partnership and the looming end of an iconic era as Hamilton departed for Ferrari in 2025.

“I was shocked. The emotions were all over the place. I hoped that I would have seen out my days with Lewis as an engineer,” Bonnington says, a rare moment of vulnerability that stops viewers in their tracks. His tone is soft but loaded with the weight of years spent chasing greatness.

That candid reflection from Bonnington encapsulates so many in the paddock and beyond feel: that the Hamilton-Bonnington partnership wasn’t just successful—it was special.

From high-stakes title fights to dramatic late-race calls, their radio messages became legendary. But behind the sharp strategies and calm under pressure was a genuine human connection—one that will soon be severed.

For months, rumors swirled that Bonnington might follow Hamilton to Ferrari, continuing their storied relationship in red. But that speculation was put to rest when Mercedes confirmed Bono would be staying—and stepping into a more senior engineer role. Meanwhile, Hamilton has been paired with Riccardo Adami at Ferrari, who formerly worked with Sebastian Vetterl during his stint with the team.

The early signs of this new partnership have been rocky. At the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, Hamilton’s frustration boiled over on the team radio in a tense exchange with Adami during the race. The chemistry that once defined Hamilton and Bono is, for now, missing.

As Hamilton navigates this new chapter of his career, The Seat offers a sobering reminder of what’s been left behind—and the emotional cost of evolution in Formula 1.
