Oscar Piastri had started the 2025 season off in a great fashion and was on par to achieve a sublime championship win. However, the Aussie lost out on a massive performance in the final stages of the year and is now trailing the title by a mere one-point deficit to Lando Norris. As such, ex-F1 driver and infamous pundit Martin Brundle recalled the one race that turned everything around for the worse for Piastri.
After returning from the summer break, Oscar Piastri managed to win the first race back at the Dutch GP. However, since then, his performance has deteriorated miserably. The Azerbaijan GP seemed to be the tipping point for Piastri, as after his double crash that weekend, everything turned out for the worse. The Aussie has been unable to achieve a comeback in performance since then.
As such, Martin Brundle recalled the woeful Azerbaijan GP weekend and how Oscar Piastri has been unable to perform well since then. Brundle explained that Piastri was struggling quite a lot in the recent races.
He recalled that the outing in Baku definitely would’ve scattered the Aussie’s brain and caused him problems to fare well. The Briton insisted that the weekend was definitely difficult for the 24-year-old as he crashed into the barriers twice and also jumped-started the race.
Yeah, and it’s been done quite a lot in the last few races. And obviously Baku would have scattered his brain. That was a very difficult weekend for him with twice in the barriers and the jumpstart, and it seems to have gone off the rails.
Martin Brundle said on the Sky F1 podcast.
Meanwhile, Martin Brundle accepted that it would be difficult to predict exactly what went wrong until and unless he sat down with Oscar Piastri and had a conversation on the matter.
Still, Brundle reckoned that McLaren was surely checking Piastri’s chassis with great attention and finding out the surprising reasons behind the failure. The team must make sure that everything is correct in the car, and it’s not the team’s fault that the Aussie is underperforming.
Without sitting down and talking to Oscar, it’s difficult to be fully accurate on this point, but I’m sure McLaren are checking that chassis, the aerodynamics, the fit, the setup of that car ad infinitum to make sure [everything is correct].
Martin Brundle added.
Lando Norris is currently leading the campaign with just one point lead over Oscar Piastri, but he has been performing comparatively better recently. The Aussie must take a look back at his recent struggles and ensure that the point of the problem is eliminated. Moreover, McLaren is in a pickle currently as they must prioritize one driver over the other to win the title at the end against Max Verstappen.
Martin Brundle boldly claimed that McLaren was satisfied with the title win as long as their driver won it and not Max Verstappen. He believes that a double-championship win for Woking is super important and must not be missed. Still, Brundle declared that there was something wrong within Oscar Piastri’s head that was causing him such troubles in performing well and emerging as a dominant force.
I really, honestly believe McLaren don’t mind which of their two drivers wins the world championship, as long as it’s one of them and it’s not Max Verstappen. It’s super important to them. Something’s happened in Oscar’s head.
Martin Brundle noted
The 2025 season is only four races away from completion. Out of the four races, two of them are sprint weekends and can be tricky for Oscar Piastri. Still, his performances so far have been dominant, and he would leave no stone unturned to return to his old pace. For now, Piastri will have to take the season race by race and hope to return to his winning ways soon.
